Panama Green Kingfisher

I spent the first two weeks of December in Panama (and have spent the last several weeks culling and processing photos from that trip...and I'm only about half way through the trip). On December 9, we visited an area called Pipeline Road in Gamboa. The dirt and gravel road is surrounded by rainforest and a few ponds. As we neared the end of our walk we passed a pond where we saw an Anhinga and an immature Boat-billed Heron...neither of which was near enough to capture very good photos, though they were exciting species to see. Suddenly, we noticed a small bird perched on a thin branch about 50 yards out in the pond and identified it as a Green Kingfisher. Only about 7 inches long, this bright fellow posed for a long time, offering us a good opportunity to capture some decent photos. Here are two shots, which I have treated differently though the basic processing is pretty much the same. Let me know which you like best. Hope you enjoy them. There will ultimately be more Panama photos as I catch up on the backlog.

My original writeup identified this bird in the text writeup as a Green Heron...which it's not. I have since corrected the writeup to identify it as a Green Kingfisher...sorry for the error if you read the uncorrected text.

Seeing it was a bit lucky, and it’s willingness to pose was most helpful. The filtered, soft light really helped. Thanks for the kind words.

Mike, so good to hear from you. I’ve been following the daily posts but haven’t posted before now since the new year started. It took me a couple of weeks to deal with a full hard drive then begin working through the thousands of photos taken in Panama. Still processing those. I thought the kingfisher photos might be enjoyed, so I shared those. Have a great week and stay in touch.
