My taste in music

I think The Carter Family started it all, at least for me – in “Folk Music”, that is. My tastes in music are many and varied, with classical well at the top, but at one time – back when real music still was available!!! – I had many, many records of these performers, listed in alphabetical order, as I don’t know how I could rate many of them in order of preference! (And there was an equivalent number in “Country Music”.) (It started with the old shellac 78s for several genres.)

Here are those I remember:

Bob Dylan; Emmylou Harris; Flatt and Scruggs; Gordon Lightfoot; Ian and Sylvia; Jim Croce; Joan Baez; John Denver; Johnny Cash; Joni Mitchell; Oscar Brand; Pete Seeger; Peter, Paul and Mary; Tennessee Ernie Ford; The Almanacs; The Brothers Four; The Carter Family; The Clancy Brothers; The Highwaymen; The Kingston Trio; The Limeliters; The New Christy Minstrels; The Smothers Brothers; The Weavers; Tommy Makem; Woody Guthrie

There is at least some music I like in each of the following categories (that I recall):

Blues; Celtic; Christian and Gospel; Classical; Congo Gospel; Country (Bluegrass, Gospel, Western); Flamenco; Folk; Jazz (Dixieland, New Orleans); Klezmer; Martial; Musicals; New Age; Opera; Polka; Vocal

Most of that which is sold as “music” today – IS NOT!!!

Opera is fine until the singing starts.

Until then it's just classical.

It seems Rock, Soul, R&B and Jazz are conspicuous in their absence. Nothing in those genres that you like? How about Folk Rock? Are you familiar with Richard Thompson?

Classical is at the top of my list, especially the three B's, Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, plus Mozart, Chopin, Schubert, Schumann, Rachmaninoff, Mahler (occasionally) and a few others. But to me, this country has come up with its own classical music in the form of classic bluegrass and country music as well as 30s through 50s jazz and big band music. The music of my generation would be 60s and 70s rock, but honestly, most of that doesn't appeal to me. Some of it does. Depends on my mood. I can sometimes get into the best of Sinatra. I can appreciate Bing Crosby, probably the best selling artist of all time who lived before people were keeping track of those things.

I pretty much agree - and there are MANY others I do like but didn't mention, simply because I'd still be listing them (as I remembered - from years ago). For instance, I could listen all day to Scott Joplin's music (best known, The Maple Leaf Rag and The Entertainer - theme music for an absolutely great movie, The Sting). There are (selectively) many pieces by "pop" entertainers (from years ago, when they produced actual music!) which I like. For this record, though, neither you nor I have the time which would be required to list all I like or ever have!

Music has played a meaningful role in my life, from solos with the church choir, Glee Club and A Capella Choir at UCSB (and almost enough music classes for a Minor), A Capella Choir and Modern Madrigal group at UCLA – and the opportunity to sing under the direction of Roger Wagner and Igor Stravinsky, plus many outside activities such as 7 years running, The Messiah, with several large churches’ choirs and full orchestra, in Burbank, California.

In the last several years I have found myself silently composing music – in my head – many hours during the day --- I now know how Beethoven could compose after he had lost his hearing completely! (I haven’t.)

I could go on and on (but I won’t) about music, basketball, motorcycles and some other things – don’t get me started!!!

You are right about that rap crap stuff. I do like a wide range of music for some reason at 78 plus years I really like Metallica.

Way to go Loren!! You have a large variety of music.

Music:
Yesterday, I had a Sonos Arc (sound bar) installed and my TV was mounted on the wall. Love it. We are in a condo, so space is sparse.

I also installed the Sonos App on my desktop, iPhone and my wife's iPhone. So now, we have immediate access to about 50,000 mp3 files on one of my two computer SSD internal hard drives (I have 4 SSD's - one is dedicated to music and data). It was so easy - about three clicks. Everything in the system and TV can be controlled by the Sonos App on my iPhone. I will let go of my old and wonderful "Stereo" equipment. Yes, the dynamic range is diminished, but the ease of access far outweighs the little loss of quality. It's time to move on. I'll be 85 next week, but I'm still alive and kicking!!

Joy to the music!!!
Mark

If you still like folk music, check out Anne Hills. She is a singer-songwriter that has produced some of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Listen to "Follow That Road", "Angle of the Light", "Sound of the Looms", "Lover's Knot", "Yesterday's Wind", "Brown Leaves". You can bring up her album ANGLE OF THE LIGHT and find most of the songs I named. I think she rates right up there with Carole King and Mary Chapin Carpenter yet her music is largely unknown by much of the public. Check out that album and let me know what you think.

Now I normally listen to classical, if posable in the background what ever I am doing. I also enjoy easy listening, big band. I am a oddball in my area. As most people listen to country, in the old days we had no choice.
