I have been wanting to get a teleconverter to use with my Nikon D500 and the AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR. But the one I have been looking at is on backorder - the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III - it's been on backorder for months!

Is there any other converter that you could suggest that I should look instead or should I just wait till I find one of these.

Thanks
Cindy

I bought a used TC-14E II. from one of reputable dealers with a good return policy, last summer. I use it on my D500 with the 500mm F5.6E ED VR. Works great auto focus, my local Nikon dealer told me this was the only way I would have it soon. There is only a small difference between the II and the III.
Good luck.

They look pretty close. The used market seems to be over pricing everything, so waiting might be the best option.

I have the TC-14E III teleconverter, and it does a good job. I also have the equivalent Kenko and Sigma teleconverters and they also do a good job.

Thanks for the link! Everything is over priced right now...doesn't matter what it is.

I would rent one and try it before purchasing to make sure it’s worth it.

Mine, the Nikon you reference, does a decent job on my 70-200 2.8 and it’s just okay on the 200-500, but I wouldn’t buy it again.

Do you have an amazing tripod and head to use it with? Are you OK with losing AF performance and image quality? Are you OK with being able to use your camera and lens when the light is bright, or needing to resort to very high ISO, which is a weak spot for your camera? You may want to look at the opinions and test data in this review - it seems to specifically address whether getting a TC would be wise.

https://photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-200-500mm-f5-6e-vr

[i]"However, let’s not forget that the 150-600mm lenses don’t do particularly well optically at the long end and cannot be used with teleconverters, while the Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E VR can be. This begs the question – can the 200-500mm f/5.6E VR match the optical quality of the 150-600mm lenses with a 1.4x teleconverter? While we would be dealing with 700mm vs 600mm on the long end, this was one of my main questions when I got a hold of the 200-500mm VR. True, there would be some loss of light (f/8 vs f/6.3), but if it was as good optically at 600mm with a teleconverter, I would probably opt for the 200-500mm instead of the third-party options, mainly because of autofocus reliability. Having tested a number of 150-600mm lenses, I was also a bit worried about quality assurance and reliability issues, thinking that Nikon would be better in that department overall. Sadly, as reported further down in this review, that did not turn out to be the case…"[i/]

Have you considered a used one?
They are pretty simple and most likely a used one will have had little if any use.

I have the III. Wait for it as it is superior. I also have a Kenko and it works with some lenses just fine but not great with my Nikon 500mm pf whereas the Nikon III does really well.

Wait for it.
But your field of view with this lens is 300-750 mm. I photograph every day in Florida Wetlands and have never needed more. Why would you?

You could TRY the latest and greatest Kenko - just be able to return it if it does not meet your expectations ....

You could also TRY optimizing the lenses' native IQ and cropping and using pixel enlargement software for larger/better printmaking .......In either case, the added magnification will require added attention to stabilization and shutter speed to reduce blurr possibilities !
