26°f here now
-2° here, and after all this cold, the inlet water pipe for the downstairs toilet finally froze. This is about the third time that's happened.

The first time would have been enough for me, I would have put a heat tape on it.
Years ago I had an under ground pipe from the well freeze, to get water to the house I ran a pipe above ground from the well to the pressure tank in the cellar set up so after the pressure tank was charged the pipe could be drained so it wouldn't freeze, the reason I could not afford a head tape the length I needed and it would have been a waste of money because the cause was going to be remedied come spring. Mid march the ground had thawed and I stated digging at the cellar wall found the pipe at 40" 40 feet later I found the problem right at the well house it was only 4" deep because of a piece of sand stone the bad part was the rock was under a corner of the new concrete well house I had built 3 years earlier to replace the old one, so I hammered with a 4# hammer a rock chisel to no avail , finally got really PO'd and drilled it with a Roto hammer and set a 1oz charge of black powder my wife was hollering your going to blow the well house up I won't tell you my reply but I had peace and quiet for a week
next was 2oz charge and no cigar the 4th and final charge was 4oz and the stone broke when I finally drug it out with the tractor it was 5" thick 2.5' wide and 4' long, that ended the frozen water pipe. The couple I bought the place from said the pipe had never frozen in the 20+ years they lived there. I said (to myself BS). I REALLY HATE FROZEN PIPES!!!!!
