The new Nikon Z 400mm f/2.8 lens is to be officially announced tonight according to NikonRumors. They expect a price north of $13k possibly close to $14k.
They say it will start to ship in the next few weeks and it is already listed in Australia at a price equivalent to $13,500 US.
The official announcement was made and the price will be $13,999.95...ouch!
It has a lot of new technology including a new type of element coating (Meso Amorphous Coat) and a brand new AF motor called the Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor1 (SSVCM).
In addition to the built-in 1.4X teleconvertor the lens is also compatible with the two existing Z teleconvertors, a 1.4X and 2.0X. There is no mention as to whether these can be used in conjunction with the built-in convertor although I can't see why they couldn't, but what do I know.
Pre-orders can be made at B&H, Adorama and Amazon if you win the lottery.
What they say about the new coating method:
“Meso Amorphous Coat* realizes the highest anti-reflection performance in NIKKOR history. Meso Amorphous Coat provides an effect superior to that of Nano Crystal Coat for diagonal incident light, and an effect equivalent or superior to ARNEO Coat for vertical incident light. With its superb performance, ghost and flare caused by incident light from various directions are noticeably reduced, delivering clear images even under harsh conditions. *With this coating system, amorphous particles, that are even smaller than nano particles, are utilized to create even more gaps within the coating to form an ultra-fine mesoporous structure, attaining a lower refractive index. In addition, a higher-precision base coat is employed to further enhance the anti-reflection effect."
By the time you add a descent mirrorless camera you're looking at $20,000 or more. Ouch!
I'll stay with my D750, D200 and D5000 as well as Sigma 150-600, Nikon 200, 300 (2) 18-55 and 40macro.
They cover everything I do.

14 grand is a lot of cash and would be hard to justify to take shots of the dog and grandchildren, however , as my tailor once said-" For every pair of pants there is an ass" so I am sure that Nikon will sell a load of them.

Here is the best news. It weights just 6.5 lbs. My Sony 600 f4 weights 6.7 lbs.
So, I am excited. Thinking about selling my Sony and Nikon stuff and getting the Nikon Z9 and the new Nikon 400 2.8.
Plus a 1.4 built in so at the flick of a lever I get a 600 f4, two, two, two primes in one for one low price.
Go Nikon, proud of you boys.

It costs $2000 more so it has to be 2 lbs heavier. They are priced by the weight.

Plus the Nikon has a built-in 1.4. The Sony does not.

Yeah the TC is really nice because a 560mm f/4 is a good focal length. Almost get away from having to get the extremely expensive 600mm f/4.
The new pricing structures and delays on product to market are inflating the prices of old Nikon equipment. Just saying... I think it is the first time in a long time I have seen used camera/lens prices going up rather than down. Its across the board. Not to mention the value of my mint 2011 Camaro SS that is a garage queen with 25,000 original easy miles.

If that is the case it would be nice to sell off some old stuff.

Yes. I agree. Now may be the time. Anyone want a 200mm f/2.0 VR? Very lightly used.

Of course a 400mm f2.8 SHOULD weigh less than any 600mm f4 lens, lol
The Sony 400mm f2.8 weighs less than the Sony 600mm f4 also.
And you get a 560mm f4, not a 600mm f4 with the 1.4X TC, do the math please Bill.
Your heart was always with Nikon, so follow your heart. This one Nikon lens would not get me to return to Nikon, lol
Cheers
