I currently use a Nikon D7100 and it has some age on it. I bought it new in Nov. of 2013. Cameras have evolved significantly since then. So, its time to look at upgrading. But, since I'm retired, I'd like to keep the cost below $2000.

My current interests are: D500, Z6 or Z6 II... those are all at or under $2000. And, maybe the D780, but to keep it under budget, it would have to be a refurbished unit.

All my lenses are for the DSLR. So, if going to the Z-line, I'd also need the FTZ II adapter. (Add $250 for that.)

My choice right now is to get the D500, as I can use all my lenses without an adapter. It would be a good step-up and not break the budget.

If this helps, my photos are typically landscape, scenery, wildlife, etc. I don't do portraits or street photography.

Before purchasing anything, though, I thought I'd ask you UHH members for your words of wisdom. Any thoughts or guidance would be very welcome. Thanks!

What lenses you have now? Are they mostly DX or FX?

If happy with the DSLR the old D500 will use your old Nikon lenses as you say without an adapter.
The D780 is much newer but FF so if you have crop lenses it will not use the whole sensor.

Both... Nikon 18-200 is DX, Nikon 50 is FX, 10-20 Sigma and 150-600 Sigma would be good on either.

Don't forget the Z5. It can be had with lens for less than your budget. Buying into the Z system is more future-proof than staying with the DX line. Not just the cameras but also the lenses are better. But going with the D500 will definitely be cheaper. Your choice.....

I would suggest finding a good used D850. Should fall into your budget.
With some Nikon shooters moving to the Z9, they are selling off their D850’s. I sold one of mine with battery grip and low shutter count that was within your budget.

Thanks... not sure about going FX, but it looks like 3 of my 4 lenses would be OK with FX. Its just the 18-200 that would be an issue.

And, I know the D750 had a lot of folks complaining about the build-quality. Haven't seen that about the D780, though. But, its something to look for.

Yes... I just missed one of those recently, right here on UHH. I procrastinated just long enough... Yikes!

The 10-20 is not FF.

The D780 is very good and if you can do with the 1 lens being cropped it is an excellent choice and has some of the latest mirrorless tech.
Again NO adapter.
If going mirrorless, wait, as the Z6 and Z7 series are not too good with AF compared to what else is on the market. So far the Z9 is the only Nikon approaching the AF capabilities of the Sony and Canon systems as a whole.

D780 is in the mix, but at the high-end of the budget. Interesting thought on waiting for Z-series to improve a bit more. Thanks!

You have an 8-year old 24MP DX camera. Actually, unless you're waiting for the buffer to clear in longer bursts, there isn't much out of date in that camera. Even one of your options, the DX-style D500, is a step down in pixel resolution at 20mp, as is the final D7500.

You might throw some water on the GAS fire and consider your lens issues if you picked an FX DSLRinosaur. Do you want to buy two, by my count, new lenses along with changing cameras and sensor size?

What if you maintained the DX crop? What if you waited for Nikon's next round of DX mirrorless and see if they update the design to include game-changing IBIS?

There will never be a better DSLR than those you can still buy today. But tomorrow, there will be even better mirrorless options.
