I took a trip with my Brother and Dad back in 2013 to observe the "Great Buffalo Round Up" in South Dakota's Custer State Park. They claim to have the largest heard of American bison in the US. They apparently keep the heard in the 1000 to 1500 head population just to keep a good balance of healthy numbers and for the land they have to graze on in the park. The animals are inspected individually, vacinated, and separated to be returned to the wild or sold at auction to cull the numbers depending on the health of grassland available for grazing. A very interesting experience. If you have an interest just google it. And if you go plan to get up extra early to get into the park before they close the entrances to the park.
