A Gripe About the Nikon Z9 User's Manual

I, too, was very disappointed with the small manual for my Z50, and frustrated by the Reference Manual on line. I still use the excellent manuals for my D7100 and D80. My Best Buy camera rep was a big help with the Z, and a visit to the Geek Squad solved a very simple problem after a fruitless call to Nikon tech, who told me to send it in for repair!

So, it would be preferred to have a 900 page book included with the Z9, oh and for efficiency's sake, in 5 languages, = 4,500 pages. Cost for increased weight, printing etc. =?? Agreed, all that basic stuff is unnecessary to include with the Z9, but in this day and age, getting a 3rd party book, or having the online version, in your language, with no added cost or weight is the way things are going to be. Somehow, I think we can adjust and move on...

I picked up my Nikon Z9 two days ago. Yes, there was minimal information with the camera, but that was expected. If the online English manual is 500 pages, consider that all printed information that comes with the camera is required to be printed in five or six languages. Check out YouTube ā€œNikon TV | Z 9 Hidden Features with Taku & Kristianā€ hosted by Chris Ogonek, of Nikon.

(Nikonā€™s SLR Flag-ship Camera is the D6 selling for about $6,500, the Z9 retails for $5,500, be happy)

I just got mine and the first thing I noticed was there was no User's Manual ... actually when I looked a bit closer, there WAS a User's manual ... more like a pamphlet. The User's Manual is 70 pages and the first 15 pages are "Notices"; things like the battery may get hot, before taking important pictures, take a test shot " ... to insure that the camera is functioning normally" / "Do not use while walking or using a vehicle". The usual crap that is always written and never actually read. So now we're down to 55 pages. There are 5 pages showing the parts of the camera with no references to what page will give more detailed information (because there are none). Following the parts of the camera are such items as ATTACHING THE STRAP / CHARGING THE BATTERY / INSERTING THE BATTERY / REMOVING THE BATTERY / INSERTING MEMORY CARDS / REMOVING MEMORY CARDS / ATTACHING A LENS .
At page 36, we get to SET UP; at page 38 SET UP is finished. Now we come to "Basic Photography and Playback".
I think I've made my point. I grant that anyone owning the Z9 (myself included) should have a pretty good understanding of setting up a camera BUT with all of the bells and whistles that this camera offers and for the price that is paid, an owner's manual should have been included. In fairness to Nikon, there is a 914 page Reference Guide ON LINE, which is really an Owner's Manual. That's 914 pages ALL IN ENGLISH! Unless you print it, it would be difficult to take on a trip with you. I'm going to guess that there will be "Third Party" manuals soon ... I certainly hope so!! Excuse me, I have to attempt to set the camera up. Please don't write about how lucky I am to have the camera, I know it and that doesn't change the fact that this camera came with virtually no instructions (when compared to say, the D810 or D850).

D5600: Same Issue.
I found printed copies on e-Bay for around 35.00, but they were 8.5 X 11 inches and I believe the .pdf file is 5 X 7.

So I downloaded it and took it to a printer (Staples, OfficeMax -- don't remember which) thinking if someone is printing them oversize I can get it done actual size for the same amount or cheaper. This would even give me a choice of bindings, covers, and paper. But they would not print it.

Does anyone know how to get an actual size copy of these Nikon manual files printed?

I keep all my manuals on my iPad, occasionally printing pages that provide that my brain struggles with. That suits me. A printed manual would be put away and passed along with the camera if I sold it. Soā€¦ those who want a printed manual, spiral or perfect bound in the size they want, should go to ā€œprint-my-pdf.comā€

I have the same issue with my Fujifilm camera. The online version of the manual is supposed to have links from the table of contents to the topics but they do not support it for all but the newest versions. To print it would be crazy as there are still no actual page numbers or a useable index. It is meant to be used as a html document but like I said, there is no functionality now. And since the Fuji menus are totally different from my Pentax cameras, I need the Fuji information often. So it is not just Nikon who are getting cheapo. Luckily I have full paper manuals for my Pentax cameras, but they are all older. Newest a K-3. I'd bet the current manuals are all only e-manuals.

So, you must have noticed the manual content is never re-written? It's a complete copy n paste of every other manual except where a new feature is added or some older feature is changed.

I never ā€œreadā€ the manual. Itā€™s a reference. If I have a question I look it up. I have used both Buschā€™s and Youngā€™s books because they go more in depth on settings and reasons you may or may not choose one. Now though if I want more in depth info I just use Google and YouTube.

Have you bought anything new in the last few years? Nothing comes with a full manual anymore. Usually youā€™ll get a quick start guide and a link to the manual. Iā€™m guessing 95% of buyers never use that link.

Iā€™ve had a Z9 for a few years and noticed the same issue when it was unpacked. What I did was to download it to my IPad and that has worked out very well for me. I have it with me when i am out of the house and shooting. It should be downloadable to any smart phone or tablet.

I am 100% with you on this rant. I hate virtual manuals. I bought a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee that came with no paper manual. Like your camera, it is a complicated machine. It is truly a pain to have to look up everything from the pdf.

Not having a paper copy of a manual is not an issue for me. It's much easier to navigate a digital copy on the phone or computer.

Also, there are tutorials on YouTube that provide set up details...just google it.

No, I would like to have an owner's manual. I don't know what it costs to print just one manual but I'm equally sure that it costs less per book in the volume Nikon would print. The cost to them would be miniscule when compared to the price of the Z9. Perhaps they could have offered it as an option; I'd bet there are a whole lot of people who will be buying the third party books that will come out, myself included.

Itā€™s not just the cost of printing. Do you realize how thick a 900 page book is? They would have to double the size of the box. Bigger boxes mean less boxes in a crate. Right there the shipping cost almost doubles. And since most people barely look at the manual itā€™s waste. Also the print would be very small. With the online manual or PDF allows you to zoom to a full page view or even larger.

Always a good move to get the 3rd party book. I bought the Busch book about a year before buying my Z6.

If the book had revealed that Iā€™d better forget the Z, then $25 for that warning is better than $1000+ blown on the wrong camera. Having bought the Z, the book becomes a useful aid.

I wanted the Z6 for two specific reasons. All else about it merely had to be ā€œjust OKā€ as long as those two functions were going to meet my needs.

Concerning Nikonā€™s ā€œmanual viewer appā€ that you mention, isnā€™t the downloadable manual a normal standard PDF ? If Nikon has dropped PDF for some proprietary file type that would indeed suck much ! Is it a PDF, or something else ???

The download is a PDF, but they also have an online version with links to the different sections.

ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ON!!!! Do you want some cheese with that whine? Did it ever occur to you, particularly because this is Nikon's first camera like this, that future firmware changes might just require manual changes? Most products today come with on-line manuals. I am at about page 750 of the 914 page on-line user's manual and I appreciate being able to read it on multiple devices. Please don't forget the special Sports Photography version as well. Best of luck.

I was just looking at the 914 page manual online. On the front cover it says ā€œRead this document thoroughly before using the cameraā€
Like thatā€™s gonna happen. šŸ˜œšŸ¤Ŗ
