Bully for them.

Just like some camera owners love their cameras and take them personally.

Oh camera, I will hug you and squeeze you, and take you everywhere...

May I suggest that you disconnect the power from your computer, open the case and have a look around. My guess is IF the noise is coming from a fan, the probability is dust build up over the past 6 years inside the case. If so, clean out the dust build up and you maybe able to get another six years out of your computer!

Instead of buying a brand name desktop, consider a desktop built from specific parts by a local store like MicroCenter . This way you can get exactly what you want and do not get all of the bloatware that comes from a mfgr. Also you can get a motherboard with all of the specific ports you need and add extra fans to insure maximum cooling. Having the right mix and number of ports is very important.

I prefer a wired keyboard and mouse. They just seem to work better than wireless ones.

Unnecessary snark (shame on you, expected better); we have 30-some pages, heading for 40, of that crap on a recent thread. Be kind, stay out of the cesspool, and don’t forget Rule #1: “Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one, and they all stink except mine.” 👹👍

Truth, not snark.

With me one never knows what to expect.

And that is your opinion.

I forgot, rainbows, butterflies, and unicorns. My mistake.

No, the mistake was mine.

Have you considered a good laptop using a 'real' monitor? Are you technical enough to assemble one from components. My desktops for the last 30 years have been assembled, generally using ASUS motherboards. This gives you the best, least costly, option. Mind you, depending on components, you can spend north of $4000 CAN. Depends on what you want. My son uses my desktops for gaming and the components are 'high end'.

When my son gets back, I'll see if he can assemble a series of components for 'a build'. I'm currently waiting for components for my next 'final' build. It uses an ASUS Z690 chipset in ITX format. The board's out, but memory is not available and a good graphics card is not available.

I think assembling a computer is easiest. Easier than assembling a piece of furniture bought from Ikea.

If you're interested in custom built, I'm going to give a shout out for Puget Systems. They built a PC optimized for Microsoft Flight Simulator for my husband c 2009. He found their pricing and working with them both highly satisfactory.

I inherited it when he died and am still using it, now updated to Windows 10. I haven't updated to 11 because I find 10 easy to work with and see no reason to fix something that isn't broken.

Essentially it was built as a gaming computer and has adapted quite nicely for photography needs. So I give Puget high marks for configuring a machine to your needs and for building something reliable that lasts and gives good performance even as software packages become more demanding of the system. Don't know how their pricing these days compares to either other custom-built or off-the-shelf suppliers.

I've always wanted to do this, but what concerns me is the very mundane problem of a suitable environment in which to do it. It's my understanding that you really need someplace dust free, and in my house, alas, there simply isn't anywhere like that. Am I making more out of this problem than it is in reality?

No need for a dust free environment - any table will do. All you need is a screwdriver, a nut driver that fits the standard PC hex head screws and a grounding wrist strap. Takes less than an hour.

They're ALL just computers. Different OS, different hardware, different price point, different add-ons and options. Both work just fine for photographic PP. I recommend staying with what you know, what you like. The rest is just endless "what-I-like" debate (like Nikon v. Canon).
