I was onboard the USS Topeka CLG-8 in the Mediterranean in 1967 and 1968. We would get up in the morning and find flying fish on the main deck. It was 40 feet above the sea.

We catch them and use them as bait for tuna out of Cali. Loong story how to do it, using a kite or balloon to make them skip on the water. Very effective. Been on boats where they crash into the boat! A lot of times they are jumping out of the water to avoid predators.
