Focusing Problem On My Mirrorless Conbination

Good Morning from Larry in Muskegon, Michigan. I shoot mainly wildlife pictures and use both a Nikon D7500 with a Sigma 18 to 300 lens (i had to give up my Sigma 150 to 600 due to its weight) and an older Olympus OM-D E-M1 paired with a Panasonic 100 to 400 lens. The Panasonic gives me a little more reach than the Sigma. My problem is I cannot focus on a moving subject (usually a bird)with the Olympus outfit. I can pick it up in my viewfinder but as soon as I press my shutter button halfway everything turns to fog. It takes great still shots. Also I would like to bump up my focal length but it appears tele-converters are not available for either of these lenses. Thank for any help.

I don't know your cameras but check the focus mode. Select a large spot or center weight if available.

Also, native lenses usually focus better than 3rd party.

Look at Nikon's 200-500 5.6. A good lens and value.

Larry, Olympus chose a different sensor manufacturer (previously used Sony) for the E-M1 – They went with Panasonic? Changing horses mid-stream?

Best advice? Get off UHH and contact Olympus, k?

btw, I'm with Joe here... The AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6E VR is epic glass for wildlife on your D7500 (provided it isn't coming directly at you). I've had great luck with League Soccer for players moving parallel to the lens, not so much when they were heading straight at me in close range... the focus motor on that consumer grade Nikkor sadly isn't even close to how fast my AF-S 200-400mm f/4 IF ED VR Nikkor locks focus. (HUGE difference in keeper rate)!

Hope this helps and please let others here know how well Olympus Support responds to your query Larry...

All the best on your photographic journey!

You may need to upgrade your Olympus set-up. The Olympus E-M1 mkIII with Olympus 100-400 is a sharper setup. And you can use the two Olympus teleconverters with it, although the 2X will soften the image to a degree. You will not have the same reach as the 150-400 and sharpness with the two teleconverters, but the 100-400 is 2/3 the weight (~4 pounds) and about 1/5 the price of the 150-400. Always have to trade cost for overall quality. Most of us do not take images over the 1600mm angle of view that the 100-400 plus 2X provides.

I use the EM1 MK II and recently shooting eagles in Alaska, I found choosing the 9 focusing points helped lock of focus easier that using a single focus point and try to get locked onto an eagle in flight.

I am not sure if the MK I had multiple options for the focus points, but check you manual and give it a try if the option is there. Additionally, I think there was a big improvement in the focusing with the MK II and certainly with the MK III.

Using back button focus? If not you should be & continuous High. Good luck.

I had that lens when I shot with the Panasonic G9. Nice lens and great camera, but not a great wildlife camera. Focus was too slow. When I got the Olympus E-M1X I sold the Leica lens and picked up the Olympus 100-400. The Leica lens worked fine and was slightly faster at the wide end, but with the Olympus the OIS in the lens works in conjunction with the IBIS in the body. It also works with both the 1.4 and 2.0 TC’s, (although I can’t imagine trying to use the 2.0, just too much light loss). And the slower aperture at the wide end is no big deal because the Panasonic pretty quickly catches up and it’s rare to shoot those lenses at the wide end.

Does the Olympus have the same behavior other with lenses? Do you have a focus limiter set on the Panasonic. Can you try the Panasonic on another body?

I don’t have the Mark 1 or the Panasonic but I do have the Mark 2 and the old Olympus 50-200 and the newer 50-150 and do not experience anything like what you describe.
