There was a big article in the papers Sunday on battery problems on Chevy Volt. They are telling owners to park 50 feet from structures or other cars! Want to try that in the city or a garage. I own acres of land, but then I'd risk a brush or forest fire if I owned one. One Testa battery expolded blowing the doors off the garage.

I knew of fires, but then gas burns also. When I thought it over it made sense, lots of electrical energy in one place to short out.

Made me chuckle..! Because the batteries in electric cars are consumable and their ability to hold a charge diminishes over time, I wonder what the "used electric car market" will be like? When the very costly battery life gets down to 50%, would people be interested in buying a car that needs batteries in the not too far future that would cost as much or more than the price of the used car?

Yeah, yeah, I know a Tesla has an eight-year battery warranty with unlimited mileage. However, beyond that, the replacement cost comes out of the Owner's pocket. Tesla batteries range between $5,000 to $7,000 plus the labor and environmental charges to change them.

Actually, according to a recent articles, Testla batteries cost > $30,000 to replace and the 8 yrs is up on some of them. I believe your values are more likely for hybrids with smaller batteries.
