I shot with both at different points. Liked both and captured some excellent images. Currently have d750, d7100. The d5100, sensor out of d7000, 16mp with 11 pt focus system. The d5600, 24mp, 39 pts. If you view cameras as tools (I do), both are pretty capable. I've shot weddings and Tennis matches with the d5100. However, if I'm going to buy a used dx, skip the d5600 and go with d7100 with 51 pt focus system, very good low light etc. Grab a 17-55dx 2.8 and you have a nice combo.
You may want to consider a camera like the Nikon Z50 or Z Fc if you are looking for a camera that is around the same size of the D5000 series. It will have later technology and if you are used to the Nikon layout and menu system the switch will be relatively seamless and the two original Z50 kit lenses give a a wide coverage area of 16mm-250mm. You can also find a used FTZ adapter (now that version 2 is out) so you can use your existing DX lenses.

I have a D5600 and about 4 months ago got a D7500 and love it, fast shutter and my photos are crisp and clear, worth checking out, just my opinion.

I am very happy with mine. It replaced a D5300 which was appropriated by my son.

Do it!
I shoot most of the time with a Nikon D7xxx. It has two disadvantages that can annoy me. It is heavy, and does not have an articulating mirror - neither of which I care about in street shooting.
Since I have no use for connectivity I bought a D5500 a few years ago, and then a second one. One stays in the car with the small Nikon 35mm lens because it is easy to hide. The other sits in a cabinet with a short zoom lens, for dog walks and other "non-photo" foot excursions. They have replaced my two good quality pocket cameras; I love them! in their place.
As I age it is the D7xxx's that will disappear first.

If you want to upgrade, why not the 7XXX series. That would be an update, not another 5XXX series.

Well I‘be become really familiar with my D5100, so adding the D5600 would not necessitate becoming familiar with a new camera series. Also I like the feel and weight of the 5XXX Series as a walking around camera, which is steering me towards just updating to the D5600. Also when I want to do serious photography I have my D750, which is my go to for events, exhibitions and such.
