I would point out that the SX40 with the hack installed will save in raw, as all small Canons do. The sx 50 has several advantages, external flash, and remote shutter release among others.

i have just bought the SX50HS and wish the auto mode provided RAW (cr2) files ... is this "hack" something i could use to yield a raw from my "auto mode" shots and how would i search for it
thanks

I am a HUGE fan of the SX50. Took a picture of the moon two nights ago and posted on another site and the first question that came back.... "what lens did you use". I have a two Rebels with three lenses, XTi and XTi4 - but I depend on the SX50 to have in my bag with me at all times. It is a great camera. I don't use a neck strap with it. I purchased a wrist strap from a company called 31 bags, it is meant to hold keys - but it is perfect for the camera and steadies it nicely.

The SX50 has Raw allready If you shot some photos eather take the memory card out an put it in the computer Or use a USB cord to transfer to the computer. Also go to Canon an download the instrutions then look up Raw

William, i apologize, the sx50hs does provide raw files for some of the "Modes", but provides only jpg files when using the "auto mode"
my problem is that i could use the "program mode" without making any adjustments which is supposed to be the same as in "auto mode" (i believe someone told me that), but i have found that auto mode's jpg are not always the same as program mode's jpgs
also when i'm in a hurry, it is convenient to "just go with auto"
sooo .. it would be helpful if i could get the raw of the auto mode
thanks for your efforts

william, i just found a web site that discusses and describes the "hack" ... it states that the "hack" is not quite ready for the sx50hs ... yet... but since it is virtually the same as the sx40hs (its predecessor) i expect it will be available soon?
do you have personal experience with the "hack"?
also, once the "hack" is installed, would it be easy to revert back to the original firmware?
thanks again

Thanks Bill, i'm still trying to get the "hang of it (sx50hs) and aside from one hitch/glitch (can't get the digital zoom to work on P mode ... got it once via "reset" but then lost it)
but otherwise just would like to have raw file from auto mode

i just contacted canon tech support .. she said that the program mode when set to auto for everything ... ie exposure, WB, ISO ... don't know what else could be set to auto
when set to these auto's, the image would be identical to if it had been snapped in auto mode
sooo ... if she is correct, and i believe that is the case, then i believe i will be shooting in program mode all the time and getting my RAW (cr2) ... are you aware of adobe's free "convert cr2 to dng" ... i am using it and it works great
thanks for all your suggestions, ideas etc
