My understanding and knowledge of film certainly helped in my transition to making photographs using a digital camera. The principles are similar but applied differently. It took some time to figure that out but once I did, it became second nature. Much the same as with film.

640K of memory??? Wow!!! The personal one I started out with had 48K.

You are comparing apples to oranges, no relationship. My point was I believe serious film photograhers grew up with a better "understanding" of the basics of taking a photo (not necessarily better photos) vs someone who just points their cell phone and pushes a button, shoots with their DSLR in auto-mode, or fixes everything in PP. No different with computers... starting with DOS, 640k memory, etc makes me understand a computer's operation better than someone who just pushes or clicks an icon today.

Wow, you were lucky. My first "computer" was a Radio Shack TRS-80 that came standard with 4Kb, I paid a fortune for the 16K Deluxe version. The 640K was my first true PC.

Most of us, and certainly I, have lived in interesting times.

I never had my own darkroom because I always had access to far better equipment than I could ever afford. My high school had some pretty good stuff, but when I got to university I had REALLY nice darkroom equipment. Part of my post-grad work even involved developing movie film. I appreciated high quality enlargers, and a big drum print drier. I had temperature controlled baths and sophisticated timers to control all of the processes. And ample space as opposed to working in a closet at home.

On the computer end, I began with vacuum tube electronics and transitioned to transistors. On the digital side I built a 4-function calculator from gates and flip-flops. I learned how to program in machine code, assembly language, and then BASIC and higher level languages.

I think all of this background has given me an appreciation for modern technology; but I don't think it makes me better at any of it.
