I just sent a bunch of money to Adorama for a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR Lens. I decided to get a jump start on the instructions so i down loaded them from the Nikon web site. After a number of attempts to increase the print size to something I could read, I discovered they were written in Japanese and interpreted by someone who never took a picture. That is to say, they aren't very helpful. So, my question is has someone published a manual that is truly helpful? I would like to know more about what I am about to receive Monday.

The page at https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/494/AF-S_NIKKOR_500mm_f_56E_PF_ED_VR.html has the manual in English, for Europe or Americas. You just need to download it and then open it in Acrobat Reader, and zoom in.

It is the same manual that you get with the lens, and includes English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.

RE: Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR Lens User's Guide (AFS500_5.6EPFEDVR_JP(4N_DL)03.pdf)
"...I discovered they were written in Japanese..."

Really?

I would be happy to provide all the pages in English for the aforementioned...
My Billing Rate is $44/hour

However Rich I would suggest you consider saving the trees...
Maybe read them on a .pdf viewer instead.
btw... folks from my generation are rather environmentally sensitive to wasting our precious resources.
We all live on a very small planet... It's all about our children's children's children...

Hope this helps.
Enjoy your new optic! Cheers!

Yup! I guess, but the link to a PDF provided will do it without the eco sermon. Whenever is is "about the children..."

Thanks to you I scrolled back to see what that was about. Normally I just zip right past posts by the UHH “Long form essay” types ... a certain several “Hogster Expert Advisors”. Anywho thanks for the chuckle ... $44/hr. Where I worked you just insert the pdf into the workflow. Thaz why pdf was invented. Such a job takes barely a few seconds.

You beat me on the offer and the price. I'd start at $100/hr for a 4-hr minimum commitment to start the effort.

Just out of curiosity, what value does snark have. Aren't we supposed to be a source of information and help? Different folks have different levels of capability in a lot of areas. If I can do something to make things easier for someone, maybe some time that person will be expert in a field that can help me. You know the old Lion with thorn in the paw story?

The instruction sheet from the Nikon site, English for customers in the Americas, says about all there is to say about the lens that I can think of. If you have any specific questions about the lens, post them here. Many of us here have this and similar lenses and may be able to help.

If all goes as planned, you may be the first person here to get a new lens delivered in the new year.

Thaz a laff. This is a while-you-wait five minute visit to Kenko, etc. On-Demand printing is not an hourly rate craft skill. It’s just pennies per impression. Wash, rinse, repeat, all day long.

Now I feel guilty for getting a very thick manual from Nikon in 5 languages, when I can only read the English version. I suppose I should cut out all the versions for languages I don't know and use them for mulch in the spring-time. Also, I suppose I can take solace in the fact that my hundred acre woods in the mountains just grew more wood than it took to create that manual in the time it took to type this, and produced more oxygen than I'll ever breathe in what years I have left....

Don't feel too bad about it. The wild fire has consumed way more trees than manuals.

I understood the OP that he did download the same manual you guys talking about. Although he didn't like it because he had to do a lot of zooming before he can read it. His complaint is really that the manual was poorly written (he said that it was written in Japanese and translated by someone who never used a camera). Since the lens was made in China how does he know if the manual wasn't written in Chinese to begin with? I found the manual isn't great but sufficient for the use of the lens.
