I would like to upgrade my Panasonic Lumix FZ150 with a new superzoom camera. Right now, it looks like it's an easy decision to get the Sony RX10-IV. But I'm hesitate to buy four year old technology (RX10-IV was introduced in 2017). There have been lots of improvements in technology in those four years. Has anyone heard any rumors about Sony replacing the RX10-IV with a new model? Or heard any rumors about someone introducing a superzoom that would compete with the RX10-IV?
Nikon's P1000 is pretty amazing. My wife has it for her birding photos and a friend has some remarkable photos of aircraft -- some shot with the plane at more than 30,000 feet.
The RX10IV is a very well respected but expensive model. The Lumix DMC-FZ2500 is a less expensive competitor, but has less range on the lens. Both have 1" sensors while your FZ150 has a smaller 1/2.3" sensor, as does the P1000. If that is adequate, the Lumix DC-FZ80 has a 20-1200mm (35 equiv) lens.
EDIT: All the above models have viewfinders. I would NOT consider one that doesn't have one.

You are like me, I keep waiting for that new Sony and nobody has a clue.

I am waiting as well.
Maybe it is like “waiting for Godot” ;-)

If you are thinking about that Sony model and fund its 600 mm focal length at the long end to be adequate, maybe you should consider the Tamron 18-400 lens with an entry or mid level Canikon DSLR body. Will cost less. have a larger sensor, longer battery life, and will be more durable to boot. Moreover, if the body goes you still have the lens and vice versa. instead of having to toss the whole thing. The drawbacks are the extra weight and the need for an external flash if you use it for indoor photography

Even tho released in 2017, the Sony RX10 IV was way ahead of it's time and remains so - is why there is no replacement ! How would YOU improve it ??
.
I still use the RX10MK3 and it is one work horse. I conjure up absolutely wonderful captures from it and it doesn't let me down. Blowups to 13 x 19 just fine. Waiting for the RX10MK5.

I have the RX10 III which is ow my back up camera to my mirror less. I here that the IV is even better. There is very little that this camera cannot compared with my A7RM4. When it is not practical for me to carry my mirrorless, this camera does the job. As cameras go, this camera is totally underrated and overlooked. Probably because of it's price. You could always see if you can find the camera used at KEH, B&H. They will take the camera back within a month if you do not like it.
I love my Sony rx10 iv. However, I take my 90d with the Tamron18-400 around the ranch about 1/2 the time. I also have an sx70, but the picture quality is not quite as good. Hard to beat the Sony rx10 mk iv. Wonderful Zeiss lens. I also have zeiss glass on my big game rifle and it is wonderful.

How do you compare the quality of photos taken with those two setups. You are pitting the larger sensor of the Nikon against the Zeiss optics of the Sony

I believe the sensor on the Sony RX10M4 is larger than the P1000? However from all I’ve read there’s no comparison to the Sony!

Plus using Sony Clear Image Zoom will double your focal range to 1200mm!!
