win.10, looking for case for hard drive. It is WD Sata and measures 4 inches. Everyone I find state measurement as 2.5-3.5. There is no room on disc to make any changes, metal plate on front is 4 inches

there is no room on sides

3.5" is the size of the disk platters in the drive.
My bare 3-1/2" drive measures 4x5-3/4 inches.

2.5" drives typically go in laptops.

I have a Dell Allienware R5 purchased in 2016. It came with a nvme2? SSD, A second SataHDD &, room for 2, 2.5" SSD drives if want to add. Just saying. I don't know about other desktops manufactures or what they use.

You have a 3.5 inch drive, the most common size. I've bought, used, and sold many of these over the years. I prefer the simple aluminum cases from Rosewill.

I use enclosures from Orico for few years - no problems. The one on picture is USB3.0 to SATA.

I use hard drive enclosure cases made by StarTech, Sabrent and others. The larger HDD drives usually found in Desktop towers fit in a 3.5 inch enclosure. The smaller 2.5 inch SSD drives fit in 2.5 inch cases.

To maximize transfer speeds, you need to buy an enclosure case that is compatible with the port on your computer. USB 3.1 is faster than USB 3.

This might help:

I just use bubble wrap with a USB cord permanently taped in place.

To Clarify - mine is a portable so I'm not wrapping around any spinning disks. This just adds to my peace of mind.

Like keeping the heat in or is that just for transport.

Have you considered heat? Where are the vents in the bubble wrap that you have tightly sealed around the drive?

Just wondering.

I leave it on all the time but it doesn't cause the drive to heat up. The stock case doesn't have any vents. I do use it for storage and I have many external drives so it's only plugged in when in actual use. It's not something that lives on my computer.

One of the reasons I use enclosure cases is to dissipate heat. Mine are made from aluminum and this works better at heat transfer than block plastic. I do not leave mine on all the time. They are on only when they are used for transferring files.

Hopefully the "pink" wrap is anti-static.
Tape (dispensing/removal) is nasty for generating static by the way.

Here is a link to the USB 3.1 case I use. I have a 18 TB HDD mounted in it.

Please note that the descriptive info says it supports up to 6 TB drives. Often this information is out of date. That being said, not all enclosure cases can support large HDDs like 18 TB.

You can find similar links for USB 3 ports at newegg and other vendors.

Installation is super easy.
