My granddaughter got me one of those nice 2" wide 3rd party neck strap to replace the camrea brand one as I hate being a walking billbord for my camera company.

So, my question is...what is the best way to attach it...to the two points on top OR to the bottom (L-bracket)? I know this is personal choice thing but I have hear some say that you are better off using the L-bracket so that the camera hangs down (with the lens pointed down).

So, What Say You?

Probably because the front of the lens is not facing forward where it can bump into something.

I never had an L-bracket on any of my cameras, For the past 50 years they pointed forward, but I carry cross-shoulder high.
(I'm just careful.)

Yea, it's a matter of personal preference.

As you already suggested, it really is a totally personal choice. There is no "best way". For me, I like my camera to fall kinda naturally into my hand so it's quick and easy to use. It's easy enough to change, so why not just try on both positions, throw it over your shoulder and see what's the most comfortable for you. Again, there's no best way for everyone, just what's best for you. Oh and by the way, nice wide aftermarket straps are a vast improvement over the string like straps that come supplied. Be sure to thank your granddaughter!

A couple of things

First, if embarrassed about your camera branding, you own the wrong brand.

Two, you can / should carry your camera with the strap wrapped around your right wrist. The camera is secure and ready in a shooting capable position. Just make slight adjustments to the length, if needed, as connected to the camera body. Use the position of the brand name as a guide for where to position the strap to wrap around your wrist, not too tight and not too loose. You can let the camera hang from the strap from your wrist if / when you need access to your right hand.

Three, get a custom-designed L-plate that leaves the strap in the original connection points to the camera. Leave the L-plate permanently attached to the camera.

Four, when you set the camera down, always remember to gather the strap and set the camera on top of the strap so the strap doesn't catch on anything passing by or snag on anything when you grab the camera to move / use.

And finally, generic black straps are available from B&H, and the other major vendors, if you really are embarrassed about your selection of brand.

(1) t is not that I am embarrassed that I shoot a curtain brand of camera...I just don't like advertising for them and setting myself up for someone to want MY camera at no expence to them.
(2) Yes, I always have a hand on my camera while carring on a strp.
(3) Yes, I have L brackets on both my cameras and both have a slot for a camera strap.
(4) I have another order in for a generic black strap.
(4) I also have a Blackpapid shoulder harness which I use for long heavy lens setups.

The real question is there any advantage or disadvange to using the camera or L-bracket connections for a camera strap.

Having a hand on your camera is not the same as wrapping the strap around your wrist. If you think someone wants to steal your interchangeable lens camera, you haven't been paying attention to the now $1200 phones, nor the 90% decline in the interchangeable lens camera market over the past 10-years. Why steal a camera that no one wants?

The advantage of leaving the strap properly connected to the camera is that is the design.

I recently started using a strap with a bracket. I like that the lens hangs down, but as stated, its a matter of preference. For decades I used a conventional strap.

As just noted, I too do not like to advertise that I am carrying an expensive camera around. I often wander into areas that the meek and some times the sane would not go. Even in the best of places it is not wise to flash your money around. After all these cameras cost a lot of money. As they say, discretion is the better part of valor.

Thanks for your reply. At least I am not alone with my concerns about free advertising that might attract the wrong kind of people.

I found a neck strap very uncomfortable. Especially with a heave lens mounted.. I use an Op Tech sling strap

I use a Black Rapid strap attached to my L-plate by a QD adapter.

Women have been the target of purse snatches for decades, I imagine a Louis virton purse is more of a target than an unbranded Walmart equivalent. By the same token a camera strap advertises if you are carrying an expensive camera and can attract unwanted attention. It makes perfect sense to me to not make it obvious. As for everything else, don't overthink it. The manufacturers have been making cameras for over a hundred years, and they spend millions on research and development. I think by now they have figured out the optimal placement of the strap. Extra brackets and gizmos seem to me to be yet another expense, and another little bit of weight and bulk to carry around. Comfort and convenience are key to me.

FWIW, I think it’s going to boil down to personal preference. I like my camera & lens pointing down along my side, so my sling strap is connected to a camera lug & the tripod socket. It works for me especially with a heavier lens. Some folks use the 2 lugs, some use only the tripod socket, others an L-bracket. The main advantage of my setup: if one connection breaks, the other prevents the camera from falling. My 2 cents

Especially number one

I use a nondescript wide strap and threw my "BRAND" strap away.
(I don't care what brand.)
