Help with the D500

I switched from shutter button focus to back button focus (BBF). The only way to focus is with the back button, the shutter is only a release now. I want to switch back to disabling back button focus to shutter button focus (reason is not important!). I have read, I have watched videos, but no go. Can someone please help me on this issue?

From a google search How do I turn off back button focus on Nikon?
How do I turn off back button focus?
Image result for How do I turn off back button focus on Nikon?
Open your Custom Settings. Find AF w/Shutter and turn this to OFF. Next, set the AE-L Button to AF On. Ensure your camera is in continuous focus mode.

I can turn off BBF, but, after I do, I cannot activate shutter button focus, thus I am unable to focus, unless I turn on BBF again.

That looks like how to set up BBF ... not how to undo it.

Just go to AF with Shutter that you had disabled to create BBF, and re-enable AF with Shutter.

You don’t actually hafta disable the AF with AEL unless you need that button for something else. If you leave it enabled you just have an extra AF activation button.

The two button reset may do the trick?

Page 293 Custom Setting A8 "AF Activation" - "Choose whether the camera focuses when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. If the AF-ON is selected, the camera will not focus when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway."

Is there a reason you want to disable the AF-ON button on the rear? Custom Setting F1 (P301) lists the AF-ON button as one of the controls that can be re-assigned.

This video shows some AF-ON options that are found only on the D500, D5 and later cameras.

No need to reset the camera.

The same way you switched to BBF. You go into your menu & select the shutter button. You can get & read the manual online if you don't have one.

Make sure that after you make the changes mentioned below, that you save the settings, then power off/power back on.
If all else fails, reset to factory default

Go to Custom Setting Menu and select A 8. AF?ON only is likely selected. Change to other option, Shutter AF/ON.

I see that folks go to the manual and even watch videos to figure these things out.

In many cases if you press the button on the back of the camera with the "?" next to it, you will get the needed information right there on the screen. That's been a feature going way back.

Then they have to comprehend and understand all that is written - unlike myself - when I left out "only" when I wrote ". . . If the AF-ON is selected, the camera will not focus when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway." It should have read - If the AF-ON onlyis selected, the camera will not focus when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway." AF-ON is not a choice in the camera's menu.

Thanks to Bill_de for the catch - he actually read what I wrote and must have thought "that ain't right"
