I am trying to download an SD card from my Canon 80D to my MacBook and into Canon Digital Professional 4 for eventual processing in LuminarAI. I’m relatively new to the camera and am having trouble losing a lot of .CR2s. My last trip was a trans Atlantic cruise and when I tried to download the files I lost the first half of about 2,000 pics.
Has anyone else experienced the same problem and, because I reformatted the card, is there a secret hiding place on the MacBook that the first batch of files might be hiding? Any help is appreciated.

Consider a permanent change to your workflow: confirm all images are (1) offloaded from the camera and (2) backed-up before (3) formatting the camera card for the next use.
Search your entire harddrive looking for *CR2 files.
Review available 'recovery' software to access files on the formatted card.
Consider if you have a bad SD card, a frequent event, discard after recovering any images.
Consider your brand / model of SD card(s). Change to SanDisk Extreme Pro, discarding all other cards / brands, if appropriate.

The idea that you 'lost' photo files is hard to understand. They are somewhere. No matter what happens in the transfer they should still be on the camera card. Sometimes you can 'lose' files by not knowing where they went during download and you have to search for them, but they are there. If you reformat your card before confirming download and backup, that is a huge mistake. I think you need to straighten out your work flow and understand what's going on during download, and never reformat until you are absolutely sure the files are double saved. If need be I would look through every folder on the computer, which doesn't really take that long of you are looking for a group of a thousand photos.

One more thing. On your Mac you can just create a folder on the desktop and literally drag and drop from the camera card. Open the created folder while this is going on and you can see the list of files growing as they copy so you know they are there. Tie them to your editing program later on.

Not familiar with the 80D, does it have 2 card slots? Is it possible they reside on the other card? I have noticed that on my 7DII the setting for the card I have directed the photos to go sometimes mysteriously changes (most undoubtedly something I inadvertently had done). If you formatted the other card as well you are SOL, but something to check.
