I made the switch to mirrorless (Nikon z6) and am loving it. However, a situation arose at a photoshoot today that I am unable to resolve. I was not paying attention to battery life and of course it pooped out. I got a message in the viewfinder, "shutter locked, recharge battery". No problem. I always carry a couple of extra fully charged batteries. I removed he exhausted battery and replaced it with the fully charged one. But. . . I still got the error message and the camera shutter would not trip. OK maybe the fresh battery wasn't so fresh, so I tried a second fully charged battery with the same result. My question is what am I doing wrong? I switched out cameras for the remainder of the shoot. When I got home I played around with the camera and it magically came to life. Other than looking like a complete idiot at the shoot things seem to have resolved themselves. However, I'd sure like to know what happened and how to prevent it in the future. (I don't need to be told, don't let the battery exhaust itself). I am assuming that there must be a reset or something but I've searched the manual and Bush's book on the Z6 but have been unable to find a solution. Can any hoggers out there help? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I can’t help with your problem, sorry. But I am curious about one thing. Are you using Nikon batteries or off brand batteries?
Did you turn the camera off before inserting the new battery?

I have the Z6 but have never had a warning about a low battery.
As mentioned above was it turned off, that's all I can think of. It's a b****r when you get a problem like that, it solves itself and you can't find the cause.

Maybe it’s a firmware glitch. Latest is v. 3.1.4. My Z6 has 3.0.0 and it never locks up. It just stops dead. Put in a fresh pack and all is well.
I would turn your camera off take out your battery. and reinstall the battery.
I would like to know the answer also. I've noticed that my Z50 seems to have an unpredictable mind of its own. Recently, my battery overheated and was also close to running out. I removed it before it ran out, but would I perhaps have had the same result if I had continued shooting until the end? Forewarned!

No All Nikon batteries. Another responder asked if I turned off the camera before inserting. I did not. Perhaps that was the problem?

Thank you ALL for your replies. I think I'll keep a close watch on the battery charge indicator from now on.

Is it fixed? Did that do it?
I can't speak for Nikon's mirrorless cameras as I am still using their DSLR's but I would imagine you would see the same effect with their mirrorless. I always change batteries after first switching the camera off. Whenever another charged battery is inserted, the green LED on the back panel lights briefly for a second or so indicating that a good connection has been established. The Green LED also lights briefly immediately after switching the camera on - confirmation that the camera is ready for use.

Thanks, I'll try it. I'm sure it was something I was doing wrong and this sounds like it might be the problem.
