FBF— am I the only one?

I guess it depends on the camera. With the Canon R5, I have set mine to the following: shutter button for large spot focus which can easily be moved around with the joystick or LCD; AF On button for eye focus (animal, human, vehicle) which is incredibly responsive; * button for cluster focus which will follow the subject in the frame. So three buttons for all contingencies.

No, I had always used the front button and see no reason to change. My hand on the camera is automatic and I only think about the picture. So why take my concentration off that till learn to automatically use the back?

My thumb is already falling where the buttons are programmed on the back of my EOS bodies. Stretching my ring-finger to find the former DOF preview button for something as critical as focus is quite a bit less natural.

I’m slowly adjusting to BBF with mixed results. It’s intuitive yet; kind of like my acoustic guitar playing (which really sucks).

I stick with the shutter release, (half press), to focus. I never felt the need or saw the point of using a different button to focus when my finger is already on the button I'm going to shoot with. I sometimes wonder, if cameras came out of the box with a dedicated focus button, (front or back), but gave the option to program the shutter release to do it easily with a half press, how many people would then use that option instead? Anyway, I like having "focus and shoot" under one easy finger press, and think I'll stick with it.
I stick with the shutter release, (half press), to... (show quote)

Since the film days, I manually focused. When I moved to digital, the shutter button half press to focus seemed the logical process to take/get a photo recorded. I started with it and I'll stay with that. Old school, lazy (not wanting to learn something new that I don't feel is an improvement), or something else, I'm not sure, but I just lke doing it the way I have done it for years.

Ben I had to smile at your inference... :)
btw, maybe don't quit the day job to play a stringed instrument.
Accomplished musicians of violin have virtually no problems with key changes in the score although it can instantaneous require an entirely different set of finger positioning... Likewise for fretted instruments i.e. classic guitar... Have you ever watched jimi hendrix workout on his Stratocaster?

Muscle Memory? Way too funny...
However what ever works for you works!

For me? Lately I've been enjoying vintage AI and AI-S Nikkors :)
Which have absolutely no issues with BBF or FBF... lol

Maybe we can stir the pot with an "iron sights verses red dot" post?
Ben why disunite and cause unrest? Come on Ben this is a Season of Love and Brotherhood...

Ben my very best wishes for joy and happiness this Holiday Season...
Trust you can share it with Family and Friends.

Cheers!

Thomas, that was never my intent and I hope I did not cause unrest. I was simply curious if others who don’t use the shutter button use a button on the front of the camera to focus. Blessings for you Thomas, and for all with whom we share this planet.

Rab-Eye, enjoy the season and photography. It 's a small group that will continue to look at what they can attack. We can all disagree but it's the method of response from a small group.

It's good you checked with us because you should always follow the crowd.

If that works for you, that's great. Customizing our workflow is what photography is all about. Once my fingers get used to pressing certain buttons, it's hard to change them. I'll stick with BBF.

BBF is a must for wildlife action shots. I can't see how anyone can argue that point. Someone will, though.

Correct, my friends, front button focus. I realized that the programable button on the front of my camera, what would’ve been the depth of field preview button back in the day, fell under my fingers just perfectly. I decided it made sense to program it to the thing I most use a button for: focusing. Therefore, I am an unabashed member of the front button focus shooters. Am I the only one in this club?

You're not alone, Rab-Eye. On my Nikons I programed the PV button for focus, the FN1 button for the level and the AF-ON for AE-lock.

BBF on Canon 5D MIII. I tried to use BBF on Olympus OM-D E-M1, but had difficulty to find the button without looking at the camera. Also, there was some issue on Olympus with BBF (I forgot details), so I switched back to half-pressed shutter button. Now that I upgraded to Mark III I may try it again.

...so funny, if you're a sports/wildlife shooter and using the front button half-press you are in a significant minority...and missing a bunch of shots. I've been using BBF for so long (15 years?) that anything else is just not on the menu...I'm just used to it and all its ramifications. <shrug>
