Opinions on my Camera Quandary

My primary cameras are a Canon Rebel that is slowly dying and not worth the repair cost and a Sony a6000. I am considering replacing the Rebel with a Canon t8i or another Sony body. My budget is in the $1500 range max. Because of lenses I already have, I am not changing brands.

Your thoughts before I decide which way to go?

Consider buying a refurbished Rebel or a used one.

Why have two cropped-sensor bodies of different brands and lens mounts? Maybe the day has arrived to asked bigger questions?

Examples:

An EOS M5 or M6 gives you a 24MP crop sensor, using all your EF-S / EF lenses with a mount adapter.

A Sony A6600 gives you a 24MP crop sensor, using all your Sony lenses as well as all your EF-S / EF lenses with a mount adapter.

Should you unload all the cropped equipment and move to a single full-frame mirrorless body?

I use my Canon lenses on my Sonys but vice versa cannot be done. OTOH Sonys are expensive. An a6600 body would consume your whole budget.

I’m guessing you have very similar lens kits for both mounts, cuz you didn’t bring that up as having any bearing on your quandary.

Maybe just keep to your current status quo by replacing a dead rebel with a healthier used rebel.

I have a T1i.
When it goes, I'll probably get a T#i.

(If I win the lottery I'll get a 5D mark IV.)

What kind of lenses do you have for the Canon EOS and Sony A6000. It seems like you have to replanning and start from beginning.

If you love the Canon equipment, I'd go with a top of the line APS-C Canon camera. That would be a 90D, currently $1,200. If you want to save some $, a new 80D ($900) would do as well

or you could check a reconditioned 90D here:

Been wondering a while if Canon has any plans for being competitive in the APSC arena. The M-series was the first seed of doubt. Seeing nothing in the R-series is not at all reassuring. Maybe they intend to be a strictly FF provider. It might be a viable model. Could be cool if they revive their old H-format in the RF mount ;-)

One can only wait and see. I would be curious to check one out if they came out with an APS-C MILC. People anticipate an R7 to follow the 7D. But I am very happy with my 80D, so I can be patient.

I should have followed up encouraging Jaymatt to continue using the Sony as I have found it to be a very serviceable
camera.😀

The Sony a6400 is a wonderful camera and well within your budget.

Not sure what Rebel you already have, (T?I), but not having a large budget myself, I have a T7i which I love. It's not the greatest, but I've had the T3i, and the T5i, now the T7i, and I already have lenses and accessories, and it feels very familiar in my hands. I'm happy with the images I get. The T8i seems like a good idea to me. Obviously I'd like to move on to a mirrorless system at some point, but I can't afford it yet. Just my opinion, others may differ, and try to spend more of your money for you, but the rebels are fine cameras and they do seem to benefit from the "trickle down effect", as far as features from the more expensive Canons. Whatever you decide, I'm sure you'll be happy with a new toy! Have fun and good luck.
