YouTube TV and Disney programming

I have had YouTube TV for about a year or so. About a week ago I received an email from YT TV saying they were having a tiff with Disney. YT TV said, "Our ask of Disney, as with all of our partners, is to treat YouTube TV like any other TV provider — by offering us the same rates that services of a similar size pay, across Disney’s channels for as long as we carry them." YT TV went on to say that if they couldn't come to an agreement by Dec. 17 all Disney programming would be unavailable on the YT network. If that happens the price of YouTube TV would be reduced by $15, going from $64.99 to $49.99.

Today I received an email from YT TV along with the latest addition of the current Ugly Hedgehog Photography Digest. YT TV said, "all Disney-owned channels, including ESPN and your local ABC station, are unavailable on YouTube TV". I couldn't care less about ESPN and other sports channel but I do watch the local ABC station for their news shows and to watch The Rookie. I can watch the ABC station over the air but I won't be able to record The Rookie for later viewing, sans commercials. There are other Disney-owned channels that won't be available but for a reduction of $15/month I probably can live with the loss.

I don't know what all you have used in the past, but this becoming the norm and with all the splitting off is becoming unsubstantable in my opinion. We have dish, no cable here and nearest over air are statiins over a hundred miles away.
Periodically we have lost networks while they argue over pricing, in some cases for dish paying fir what is free over the air. We no longer get HBO and associated materials as they became HBO-max. Also, lots of material on Disney is now gone to Disney+. We both love sci fi, but that would mean getting Paramount, Disney and maybe CBS+ as streaming services which is problematic due to datalimits and speed issues with satelite internet! Only solution is a service which would stream and store in early morning hours 2-6 am. But that means more more for equipment, service and for two or three streaming services which could of course due to us what you tube or disney is doing to you.
Since we would drop something tonpay for this don't know if these companies really make more or just get new members to count. I worked for a society that was bleeding membership, but at meetings only spoke of how many new members they had just signed up.
Until some sort of consolidation occurs I don't see any end to this sort of thing. Different companies have done this with sporting events periodically also. If more and more splittoffs occur, I could see Dish and Direct go out of business.
Good luck and unfortunately welcome to the club;

P.S. Recently it was reported that in the Balt.-Wash area, the average user uses around 1 TB of data per month, with 10%? around 1.5 or more, that would be around 2yrs, give or take of our limits, excluding the 2 am to 6 am period. I doubt our dowmload speeds would even handle that amount.

I’ve had YT Tv for about 2 to 3 years. I also have Disney + which I pay for anyway. I don’t have any young kids in my household so it doesn’t matter to me and is actually a savings. When my grandkids come they would watch Disney+ anyway.
As for ABC News, that’s a separate station from the regular programmed ABC so you shouldn’t lose anything. Besides, there’s lots of other news sources to choose from.
BTW, ABC is very snooty, and gives everyone a hard time negotiating. They did it with Optimum, too!
Also, the sound with ABC stations on YT TV used to go out of sync every once in a while. Someone must have complained because it hasn’t happened for a while.
Actually, I hope they don’t make a deal with Disney because I like the lower price, but that’s just me.

Oops! I just checked my YT Tv to make sure I was giving you the right info. I was wrong. ABC is gone.
Sorry about that.

Just checked, again, for a way to watch ABC without cable or YT TV. Download FUBO TV. You can use it for 7 days feee trial, & $4.99/month which can be cancelled anytime. Still $10 savings. It says you can watch ABC & other networks live.

Hope this helps.

When you say, "I could care less about ABC", you're saying you care somewhat no matter how little. When I said, "I couldn't care less about ESPN", I'm saying I don't care at all - not one iota. The difference between "I could care less" and "I couldn't care less" has been discussed on numerous platforms.

Another way to watch ABC without cable or YT TV is with an over-the-air antenna, which is what I use. But as I mentioned I can't record The Rookie for later viewing.

I checked FUBO TV but it looks like it is $64.99/month, not $4.99.

Meh, just wit - Alphabet (which owns Google, which owns YouTube) will just go and buy Disney some day - and then they chan charge a flat million dollars a month or whatever.

I don't know if anyonr recalls the TV series "Max Headroom" for decades ago, but it seems the world in which that took place, where the three networks amounted to being government-like entities, is coming to pass...

This happens all the time - big companies fighting over money. Disney and YouTube are barely managing to scrimp by.

I would think in time this will end. There's got to be a limit to how much money people can afford to spend on entertainment, so eventually some will lose out and consolidation will occur. But with the cost of making videos so cheap, maybe not. Also, we all may lose a lot of interesting material, now available, but lost if we go back to a few providers. With Dish some of the specialized channels seem to always be coming and going. Another downside for providers, but one they may not even notice, is loss of potential customers like me. If I'd gotten you tube for the Disney stations I'd be pretty pissed, so this just makes me stick with Dish alone.

I live just a few miles from Seattle's over-the-air transmitters so my in-house antenna gets maybe 20 channels. (If you go the antenna route, get an amplified one, NOT an unpowered flat panel you glue to a window.) Obviously not a solution for those living in the boondocks. My "smart" TV also gets N'flix, HBO Max (with my AT&T phone subscription) Amazon Prime video and the no-ad version of YouTube (but not YT TV). Can't think of anything I'm missing except the shopping networks.

As far as recording goes, I still have three high quality VCRs which will do the job very satisfactorily.

Looks like it has already ended. Received an email from YT TV that they reached an agreement with Disney and the regular programming will be reinstated, including the $64.99 price. It was nice while it lasted but will get the credit for one month.

Hopefully, I'll be able to connect the other TV to HOB Max and Disney+ today. Ah, the complications of modern life.

Best Buy sells a "Tablo" box for around $100 which allows you to record and save Over the air tv
