The newest IOS update 15.2 will allow you to control the Macro Mode feature when taking a photo. Before this update you had to manually go into the Camera settings and turn the feature off to keep if from coming on. Now it can be done while taking a photo. Before the update, as you got really close to an object, the phone would automatically switch to macro mode on it's own. Now there is a small flower icon that will light up at the bottom of the screen and you can just hit the icon to turn it off if you want. So now, just leave the auto macro feature on in your camera settings and then control it inside your camera during your live shoot.

Great info, I just set mine up!
Excellent. Just updated to iOS 15.2 and turned on the feature. Loving the iPhone 13 Pro Max camera! Getting better all the time. Both the camera and my ability to properly use it. Thanks, again, for the heads up. Really appreciate it.
