I let patches of bird seed scattered from my feeders grow around the yard, in the flower beds and in my large potted plants. It makes for some "natural" food when they mature and good shots of the birds (and squirrels) eating some.
This little one was perched in one of those plants, nibbling at the ripe seeds and maybe some small insects while waiting a turn at one of the crowded feeders or water dishes. The bird and plant have back lighting from a low sun just after noon (I am facing south to take the picture.) so the near side has fill flash, at a bit over 40' with a better beamer.

Cool capture of a cute & cheerful little bird.
We do the same with the bird seed spillage in our back yard (our feeders are placed in our prairie wildflower planting). Makes for some interesting additional species that will visit the wildflower and bird seed plants, but not the feeders. Choosy little beggars, some of them.

Thanks, yes and some of them I have watched pull seeds out of the feeder and toss them repeatedly until they finally keep one just like a bunch of the others they tossed. The dove and ground feeders will sometimes sit under a feeder just to catch the rejects.
