I'm sure this has been addressed before, but can anyone tell me what is causing the moon like object to appear in some of my photos?

This is an internal refection within your lens, when you allow sunlight to directly strike the front lens surface. Lens hoods can prevent this lens flare. The octagonal shape is dictated by the six blades of your lens iris (aperture).

Do you think that a polarizing filter would help?

My canon 10-22 has this issue A LOT I use a hood and a cp it is best to change the angle, at least with my lens.sometimes it seems to get better if I speed up the shutter

Would a lens hood help with this? If so, what type should I get?

Problem is a lens hood will help but not eliminate. Depends on the lens you are using my 18-135 has a 1 1/2 inch in depth lens hood I don' get this much. My wide angle has a about a 1 inch hood on it which needs to be removed when shooting at 10mm or the corners are dark. Adjusting the angle works the best. You do not have to walk down the canyon and shoot back at the subject just turn your shoulder a bit try shooting down ward like you did in the second image but move to your right bit more! If you have your settings avalible it can help to see what your shooting at. These folks know there stuff they can tell a lot by just the settings and gear. I trial and error and always try to check my shots in the field! Yes I annoy my subjects sometimes! :) they are still very nice shots great exposure to capture the colors
