…they need to produce that many because they don’t last long in the wild…I watched a peregrine falcon swoop out of the sky and pick one off in a blink of an eye…

We have a couple of Canada geese that return to our yard every year to mate. We call them Lucy and Ricky. And yes, each year we see them start out with a bunch of goslings and over time that number decreases - we also have eagles, hawks, osprey, foxes and other predators living here. This year, they lost them all...

At our nearby wetlands I watched a mother moorhen with ten chicks one day last spring. The next day there were six, the following day there were two, and the next day there were none. Many birds will have multiple clutches of babies.
