Z50 flash not firing

Trying to force the flash on my Z50. It isn’t firing.

Sure I changed a setting to cause this. Expecting a force flash or fill flash setting but can’t find. Can only find TTL or manual. Trying to use TTL.

Ideas?

I was having trouble with fill flash not firing on one of my Nikon DSLRs the other day - can't recall which camera, but on the fly I switched to the dreaded P setting and it worked perfectly.

Thanks.

Found two main issues. Camera was on video mode which was cause of not flashing. Also was hiding flash modes on menu.

Also had on rear synch which caused delay.

Also switched to P and that worked. Now will try other modes.

Is this the pop-up flash or a speed light?

If it's the built in flash, you might want to check the iMenu. Some flash modes do not work with all exposure modes.

Ok glad you figured it out.

It seems like half the challenge of speed-light photography is getting the damn thing to fire.

For my Z6, I have to set my camera "SILENT" mode to "OFF" in order to have my flash to work. I am not sure about your Z5.

Assure not on silent mode or auto
Flash will not fire on silent
Have not figured out yet how to force fill in flash

I love my Z50. However, a continual source of annoyance is that it is too easy to flip the video mode switch into video. When that happens the camera no longer behaves like it should and I start missing shots. It's only after ten minutes or so of frustration that I realize I have accidentally flipped the switch into video.

For some reason, the Live View switch on older Nikon DSLRs never seemed to have caused this confusing problem. Maybe it's because the LCD screen would come live when the Live View switch was toggled.

Other than that, I have been very impressed with the Z50, its light weight, the way it feels, its performance and the images it produces.

As noted above the video switch was the cause of the problem. I rarely use video and don’t recall switching it on purpose.

I never had this happen on my DSLRs. Perhaps it relates to the (I think) new feature enabling stills while in video mode. When not using video it enables still shots…but doesn’t allow the flash to fire. It makes sense as you wouldn’t want the flash intruding on a video.

I too like my Z50. I find myself grabbing it in preference to my Z6 most of the time. I love my Z6’s 24-200 lens though. Wish there was a DX counterpart that would be smaller and lighter. There is a new 18-140 which I might try in the future but for now I mostly use the 16-50 for its light weight, small size, and excellent image quality.

I find the NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-5.3 VR lens is an exceptional lens for DX telephoto. During a summer monsoon night in the Arizona desert I captured this photo with it. (50 mm, 1/20 sec, f/4.5, ISO 800, -1.7 exposure compensation, P mode, Vivid picture control.) For lower f stops, I use F mount lenses with the adapter. The adapter also performs very well; I have not had one issue with the adapter.

The Z DX 50-250mm lens is becoming one of my favorite telephoto lenses.

Mine too. But I’m considering the 18-400. I’ll wait to see if Tamron or Sigma convert theirs to Z mount…at 1/3 Nikon’s price.

Nice shot, dramatic and exciting! Love the colors!

FYI - Im not used to hearing the word monsoon and Arizona desert used in the same sentence.
