I was lent a 28-300 lens for my D750 and went back to the stump.

Again, your comments?

Same east the first.
Nice but would look better in B&W

Same as the first:
Would look better in B&W and better sharpness on the subject (Smaller aperture)

Interesting project, but I'm still finding the background is competing with the subject.

I made two versions to isolate the stump which could work with both images you have posted. Firstly the frame was reduced to remove some of the background.

1, the background was blurred significantly

2, the background darkened but not blurred anymore and stump brightened slightly

My preferred version was No 2 as it showed a recognizable forest/woods in context with the stump.

Grahame, thank you. That’s useful and if the weather gives me a chance these next few days I will take more photos.

I like the image... Does anyone see what I see? Look closely at the top of the stump... Do you see an image there... Looks like a Parrot somewhat... I have done a number of shots in the past that looked like animals coming out of a tree stump or fallen tree..

But Larry, I would be the first to admit that that part of the stump is out of focus. Let me get the basics sorted out and then I can have a squint at it, looking for animals!

yep it is slightly out of focus and that helps with the illusion... Let me know if you see it.. bird is facing left :)

Now that you mention it I can see, very vaguely, a face and a snout looking to the left. I wouldn’t have seen that illusion without your help! Thank you!
