This rock formation are called Cathedral Rocks and they are located outside of Sedona, Arizona. Before any one accuses me photoshopping the full moon into the photo, I knew that the "full moon" would rise above this formation. Actually this is one day before the full moon, that is why there is still sunlight on the Cathedral Rocks. The full moon occurs when the mood is 180 degrees from the sun.
If you want to make such a capture done load THE PHOTOGRAPHERS EPHEMERIS to your smart phone or tablet. This application will display sunrise/sunset moon rise/set times and locations via GPS, with a graphic display for wherever you are located. Very hand tool.
A simply beautiful photograph, Fred!
Very nice image! Did you PS in the moon? Just kidding...
As Fred said programs like THE PHOTOGRAPHERS EPHEMERIS are very handy for knowing the when and where the sun and moon will be. I concur with Fred, you need one of these apps..

Beautiful image. You had and used all the right tools to get the shot that you perceived and wanted.
Nicely done, Fred. Nothing like a bit of planning to assist in getting a photograph such as this one.

A beautiful image. Very handy to know exactly when and where the moon will appear. Very handy also, for this particular image, is the very interesting sky. Good work!
