This is a focus-stacked image of the three simple eyes (Ocellus) of the dragonfly that are located on its vertex. A partial view of its large compound eyes can be seen on each side along with the partial view of its antennas.

Thanks, Longshadow. I enjoy seeing the different features of a specimen under magnification and then sharing them with others here.

Thanks, UTMike. I know that they can be quite abstract at times. I oftentimes share aspects that we can't see with an unaided eye and magnification allows me to do that. Doing this also provides me an opportunity to make the most out of my collection of preserved insects which helps fill my day.

I have taken many photos of these guys but your stacked image shows me things I have never really seen before. Excellent as usual.

Great shot Gary. The simple ocelli detect light and dark and quick movement and the nerves of the photoreceptors connect directly to the motor centre and they’re able to do the calculation in one step basically bypassing the brain. Well done.

Thanks, Doc. The Better Half has told me at times that I do things that must have "bypassed my brain".
