I've used a Wacom tablet for photo editing for more than 20 years. For point and click I still use a mouse, but it's unimportant what kind as long as it fits in my hand comfortably. The one I have now I don't even know what brand it it is. It has a logo on the top that looks a lot like a Tesla. I can't even imagine editing photos with a trackball or pad.

Thank you all for commenting. I’ve come away with a few points. I’m surprised how many of you are using trackballs or tablets. I’m sure they offer some advantages in photo editing but this dog is too old to learn new technology tricks! And it seems that mouse design features and specs are not a significant consideration in photo editing since speed can be adjusted in the Window software and, as some of you have mentioned, good technique in holding and moving the mouse can make some editing jobs easier.

I bought a Logitech Marathon M705. At $30 it’s not a major investment and it seems to meet my needs. Thanks again!

Yes, mouse speed can be adjusted in Windows OS but it's SO MUCH easier to have a one-button solution on the mouse rather than 6 clicks to change the speed in the OS (and another 6 clicks to change it back to the way you are used to using it).

A mouse is the only thing that works for me. Touch pads, trackballs, and Wacom tablets just slow me down or are cumbersome to operate.

Your standard three button (that includes the scroll wheel) mouse should work. Most modern operating systems allow you to adjust the sensitivity to your liking. Apart from that, it's all about the ergonomics and how it feels when you use it. I have a logitech bluetooth mouse that I have set to use on three separate computers (work, main pc, laptop) and it does just fine on all three.

I use one of these too. Depending on your set up you may find it difficult for the mouse to talk to the receiver. Cure this by putting the receiver on a flying lead and securing where there is a direct connection. Mine (M705) turns itself off and a pair of 'AA's lasts about 8 months.

I'm with you. Track balls or touch pads don't work for me. Has to be a mouse.

In contrast, I have used a Logitec Trackball for many years. Yes, it requires cleanup periodically. Thumbs down on touchpads on laptops.

I have a couple of Logitech MX Master 2S mice; they are wireless and a good size, and I've used them for years. I like wireless mice... Bluetooth... Seems to work on all surfaces and is 'fully adjustable'.

My two laptops, the touchpad is disabled and have bluetooth mice. That way it frees up one of the USB ports.

They are USB rechargeable and they hold a really good charge.

Yeah, that's why I didn't mention that mouse in my original response. I only break out that "beast" if I'm playing games....lol

It has programmable buttons for quick actions so fingers don't have to search on the keyboard and stuff....overkill for anything but gaming..hehe

...shoot, I use the sh*t out of my gaming mouse for *photo* editing, not gaming (don't do that and prolly never will). I find, however, that I can accomplish much more having keystrokes under my fingers and thumb. Say I have 300 images I'm working on (and may have 30-40 groups like this typically after a large band show) I need to get them processed quickly! Let's say I save 3 seconds an image just having processes, literally, under my thumb rather than moving the mouse. Do the math. This also goes for having a fast computer...time is not only money, for most of us it's a huge commodity! ;0) Do I need that kind of speed normally? Probably not, but since I've developed the technique(s) I just do it and don't think about it.

This is an old thread that recently became active, so I'm adding this suggestion.

For working with images you might consider a dedicated photo editing controller like this Elite model from TourBoxTech.com. There is also an older and less costly version called the NEO.

The controller will not completely replace the need for a pointing device.

My favorite is the Logitec Performance MX"
It can be programed with it's software to do the many things that you might like + it's rechargeable.
