I just recently upgraded my previous version of Topaz Denoise to the AI version. I decided to test it out on a GoPro image. A few nights ago I was doing a Nightlapse of the stars using a GoPro Hero 9. I was shooting 30 secs exposures. As to be expected using a small sensor camera the original images were pretty noisy. Here is how Topaz Denoise AI took care of that. The image here is split. first half original noise, second half after Denoise took place.

On another note, the GoPro Hero 9 did a pretty good job of capturing stars in a very low light setting.

I am sorry, but retaining specular highlights and blurring the rest is not a sign of greatness, especially when it leaves a visible pattern behind.

It is what it is. You have to remember, it's a 30 sec exposure so the earth is rotating, there's going to be some blur. I was recording for 2 hours in order to compile the images into a star trail.

Either deNoise AI worked well with noise or Topaz extinguished millions of small stars!! Images such as yours are special and are an extreme test for the Topaz deNoise AI to recognize what is real and what is noise.

An excellent discussion of Topaz AI deNoise and its use in AstroPhotography. The discussion says that is works wonderfully with AstroPhotography:

Jojo, Northern Michigan is or was when I lived in Michigan... was a fantastic place to view the sky. I will never forget being on a small island in Lake Superior outside of McGregor Ontario, miles from Sault Ste Marie Michigan/Canada 1960. Isolated out there it was a primitive black sky star like the song "diamonds in the sky." The big mylar satellite "echo" went across the sky like a bright fast-moving large bright star.

Looks like a huge improvement; however, the de-noised right side is not the same photo as the noisy one on the left. You should be comparing the same photo.

.I just looked again, your right. They do not look like the same image. The stars that are left, are not the same.

Using PS CC and simple averaging with
- Averaging - Blend if - Opacity (70%) - Fill 96

Results:
- Highlights are visible
- Some noise is retained (as noise, not blur) and the noise level is highly adjustable

I will try this technique out. and compare the two on my desktop screens.

Well believe it or not, it is the same photo. It's just a cropped section of the photo. Anyway, I did it again using a different file from that GoPro Shoot. This is what I did.
1. Opened Original file into PS CC
2. Duplicated the layer: CTRL J
3. Renamed the layer: Topaz Denoise.
4. Ran the Topaz Denoise filter on the top layer
5. Masked out half of that layer to reveal 50 percent of the bottom Original layer.

I made a screen shot inside of Photoshop showing this.

Being observant and giving an honest feedback with a sample is being a PITA for you? Good for you. I just do not know how you can sit down.

It's good to see that it had the correct meaning to you.

In my humble opinion if Topaz Denoise AI is not the best noise reduction editor it could not be too far behind. I was not lucky trying to update and indeed it messed up my previous version. After all that I was left with the original version of Denoise which is what I still use. I have not tried downloading again because I am afraid it could do the same to the version I use now.

Topaz Denoise did a great job with your image.
