A surprising number of people seem to post their Gallery posts there on purpose.

I never even view the threads in this section with titles like “Morning in the Garden” etc etc.

So what might I be missing ? I really already know that. Good to miss it. All the “creativity” involved is in the title.

A number of things come to mind, not necessarily by importance:
1. Light and composition is critical (focus technique is helpful, as well)
2. GAS is infectious and no effective vaccine currently exists. Research is limited.
3. Post processing is your friend and take many forms
4. There are a lot of wonderful talented people out there who are generous with their knowledge and experience.
5. There are a lot of menacing UHH trolls who are incapable of positive thoughts
6. There's more than one way to skin a cat... (it's a metaphor folks)
7. Creativity is rewarded
8. I very likely would've never tried IR
9. I'm incapable of starting my day without it

The primary change I made was going to BBF, and purchasing a sturdy, quality tripod and using it.

I've been back from a few weeks travel culling images and thinking about 'Technique School' topics. Alas, those topics are a few weeks into the future with thousands of images to cull and several ideas to write about. But in the meantime, a thought hit me that can be asked today: How has UHH changed your life? (I had to use another subject title to assure this thread didn't get pushed to chit chat.)

The thought / question came from a range of images where I was shooting maybe a bit too slow for the wildlife with an effort to keep the ISO low, specifically at ISO-100. That's a change that I can trace directly to UHH. As I approach my own 9-year join-date, the focus on low(est) ISO is something I picked up here at UHH. In the old days, I never worried about the digital ISO, at least not like I do today, and my cameras are all way better today than the model I shot back before joining.

How about you?

I have definitely learned things that have improved my digital photography. But sometimes you need high boots to get to the nuggets.

Your ISO example is interesting. You sure you didn't photographically slide backwards on that?

I have gear lust like most everyone. What I want (almost need) is a model that lets me run auto ISO in Manual and with EC. That's the next important 'refinement' in my shooting, something I can mimic now with my manual focus lenses on the mirrorless Sony. But, I'll persist with EOS 5DIII until it reaches the original planned end of life.

This General Discussion section has most of the traffic, and it’s a Roman Circus. It’s understandable that specialty sections have lower traffic (macro, astro, etc) but the Gallery and Critique sections are not specialized. But those two sections are relatively quiet.

Among those who DO feel UHH helps in their growth I wonder how many ... or few ... would say that the Critique and Gallery sections have greatly contributed to their growth. IOW are those sections actually productive ?

I've found places to visit ideas from the Gallery, as well as we have many inspirational bird, macro and landscape photographers sharing excellent work.

What a long, strange trip its been. UHH members told me what camera(s) to by to match up with older Nikkor AF lenses. I am a wildlife picture taker and didn't learn much about that I didn't know BUT I learned a lot about composition both in the camera and in LR/PS. I learned about other software programs that could make things easier and faster. Many people tried to get me to switch to LR to PS for my primary photo editing--with a total lack of success

Overall UHH has been my best source of tech support, help and advice. I don't remember how I found it but UHH is the major reason for me continuing in picture taking

I tend to find something that works and stick with it, which isn't always the best thing. What I get out of UHH is ideas that I haven't tried. Sometimes they benefit me, sometimes they don't, but I wouldn't have thought of them on my own. One thing I do enjoy is giving advice when I know the answer to a question.

I have learnt much since 2011, and am grateful. I have gained an insight into how photographers think - and the quality of the photography has pushed me to improve what and how I shoot. Thanks to all Hoggers.

Yes, for the same reason, I pay a lot more attention to keeping ISO low. I don’t how many, but I’ve learned a good number of things by reading questions/comments from “new” photographers and “old”/professional photographers. This includes takings shots and PP. I look forward to reading UHH every morning. Thanks to everyone!

UHH has been a terrific reference for my photographic journey. I find some responses and personal attacks a little unproductively offensive but it has been my main source for solutions and technical (LR in particular) reference. Thanks Paul, for your contributions and clarity of communication.

It’s going to be the direct cause of my first serious attempt at a bird photo.

I’ve always tried to keep ISO low for digital and film unless going for a specific effect.

Your question made me think. Thank you. I sit here reading this, glance out my living room windows every few minutes at a beautiful scene. The same every day, but I am more aware of the changes of light and the detail. Frequently one of you posts a picture of a small piece of your world that makes me appreciate the parts and the sum of the parts there and here. Your skill gives a fresh idea daily. Thank you.
