I've gotten better for sure, a wealth of info. Got a question? Look it up, someone knows.
Everyone is helpful and courteous. Jack

Thank you for the reminder Paul. When I first joined 2 years ago I would ask for constructive criticism on each picture I posted, sometimes I would get it, often times not. I haven't been asking lately but I think I'll go back to asking. Thumbs up and kudos make me feel good but are not real helpful with my growth, and sometimes when I see some of the pictures others post with thumbs up etc. I start to think maybe my pictures aren't all that good either and people are just being kind. I did check out the critique section and there are some members who have much talent and knowledge offering advice, unfortunately there is at least one, not to be mentioned by name, who's advice I would take with a grain of salt. I may try posting there anyway and pick and choose which advise to heed. Thanks for starting this thread.

I laughed at your comments here. I tend to give my honest opinion sometimes it's positive and sometimes not. And of course I'm haunted by that familiar quote: "If you don't have anything positive to say........." but that doesn't help either. I try to be kind though.

I actually don't mind tough criticism as long as they tell me what I did wrong and how I might improve. I know some if that may be subjective but it still helps me learn. Also, if someone likes an image of mind it's more helpful if they tell me what they like and not just thumbs up. I know that's a lot to ask and I certainly don't expect these kind if critiques all the time but it would be helpful sometimes. I'll try asking with future posts and hopefully get some tips and helpful hints

I've been back from a few weeks travel culling images and thinking about 'Technique School' topics. Alas, those topics are a few weeks into the future with thousands of images to cull and several ideas to write about. But in the meantime, a thought hit me that can be asked today: How has UHH changed your life? (I had to use another subject title to assure this thread didn't get pushed to chit chat.)

The thought / question came from a range of images where I was shooting maybe a bit too slow for the wildlife with an effort to keep the ISO low, specifically at ISO-100. That's a change that I can trace directly to UHH. As I approach my own 9-year join-date, the focus on low(est) ISO is something I picked up here at UHH. In the old days, I never worried about the digital ISO, at least not like I do today, and my cameras are all way better today than the model I shot back before joining.

How about you?

Photographically not terribly much, but it played a useful part in confirming my perception of the good, the bad, and the ugly of human nature . . .

I joined this site to learn digital photography and this resulted in the selection of a Z6ii body, which is back ordered from B&H, and a Z 35mm f/1.8 S lens. Member input also assisted in the selection of my software. My son also chipped in with a Peek Design 6L sling bag for a Christmas gift. Nice gift from him.
Thanks to all for your help.

I still shoot film and I was born in Chicago, walking distance from the old Helix on Racine St. Now that was a camera store. Or Central Camera on Walbash.

UHH has forced me to spend thousands of dollars on photo gear. I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

I have learned a lot about how different camera equipment works with a camera. It helps me in purchasing new upgraded products that I know nothing about and have UHH members comment on how good or bad a camera product can be.

I always thought I had a focusing problem. Blamed my lenses, blamed my eyes, then learned through UHH about shutter speed and lens length causing camera shake blurriness. Changed my settings and furthered my photography a great deal.

Discovery of better equipment: Camera. support,
macro rail, quick release, lighting etc..
Learned about reliable "stores" to purchase
from.
Learned about Adobe CC and Lightroom
Moved me away from Auto and full-time jpeg to often using raw.
Learned about focus stacking.
Back button focus.
etc. etc......
In other words, most of what I know beyond pushing a shutter button.
UHH is superb...except for the occasional political and sparky comments. Be nice, learn, enjoy, thank you UHH

Photography is 80% mental, and the other half is PhotoShop.

You sound like Yogi Berra who said when asked about baseball:
“It’s 90% physical and the other half is mental.” Yogi also said, “when you come to the fork in the road, take it.”

I have truly enjoyed being part of UHH. I really appreciate the careful explanations coming from you and other on this site I see as experts in the art of photography. As a sort of jack of all trades and master of none, I am truly impressed by those who are gifted in their field and have true enthusiasm about what they do. I also remain somewhat reluctant to post my photos because I see how much my photo quality and art pale in comparison to so many posters.
I also enjoy the chit chat section. Where some of the jokes come from I do not know-but keep them coming.

I have learned a great deal and am grateful to many of you on this site.

What others do should have zero impact on what / how you choose to share. But, if you have a unjustified fear of how your images compare, there's also always the freely available offer to post some images and ask for help and / or ideas of what to do differently.
