I used to have AAA, but the price got too high. Right now, I have Good Sam on two cars. It wants to renew for $90. That covers towing to the nearest facility regardless of mileage, gas, flats, dead battery - the usual. We have two Honda Fits -2015 and 2020 - so I don't foresee a need for these services, but you never know. Before I went with Good Sam a few years ago, I checked out the other services, and this seemed like a good choice.

As you probably know, they all use the same towing companies in any given area, so if the guy is busy, you'll have a long wait, regardless which service you have.

Any opinions on one service over the other?

EDIT: Good comparison -

I have used CAA in the past and went to Good Sams when CAA got too expensive. Their service is great. I used to tow 5th wheels for awhile and they were great at that as well.

Roadside service is an absolute necessity for peace of mind, especially since it covers a European vehicle that has no room for four asymmetrical spare tires. Coverage is included in my State Farm policy and fortunately never had to use it.

When our Subarus aged out of the free roadside service we got Allstate, worked out so far.

As Julian said, road side service is for peace of mind, if for no other reason. I've used AAA for years and they have never left me down. Sometimes they are a bit slow, but one time I swear they were around the corner when I locked myself out of my car a very rural Iowa. They were spectacular in "roadside assistance" at Eppley Field, with a dead battery in the middle of a horrific rain storm at midnight. Yes it was a "dark and stormy night." Have never tried other road side assistance companies.

How much (lifetime) have you spent on these plans? How many times have you been towed/needed assistance? Like all insurance, the odds (greatly) favor the house. Why insure something that costs so little?

Odds always favor the insurance company.

Like you said, they all use the same towing services! I used to be a AAA member for many years until I found out that my insurance carrier would add roadside service for less than $20/year.

Towing is included with our auto insurance. The problem with using your auto insurance for roadside service is it goes against you as a claim, to me not worth having rates go up because of filing claims.

I have AAA RV Plus as we have an older motor home. It's in great shape, but you never know.

We were towing our enclosed 16' ATV trailer when a fuel sensor went out on our truck. AAA towed both our truck and trailer, no charge.

I just used my State Farm Insurance road side assistance, for a tow. They are/were excellent.

Bayou: The odds are always in the insurance company's favor. However, when you are with a dead battery in an airport parking lot in Omaha, Nebraska, in the middle of the night, raining like hell, a wife, a sister, two little grand daughters in the van, the cost versus use is very, very low. Without AAA I would have been reduced to asking Google the nearest battery delivery service to come to my assistance. Bonne chance!

Youse pay your money and takes your chances

For the last 50-plus years, we've had AAA Road Service. We do get a slight discount because we also have AAA Auto Insurance. Have used them a few times, no cost to us, and service was very prompt.

I understand from some of the TV ads that Geico and Progressive advertise "built-in" road services. Just something to consider.

I still like AAA because I have the best plan that covers 200 miles of towing to where "I" want it towed, not to the nearest repair place. Also, it covers my motorcycle, and RV (if I had one) One other thing it covers is the cost of an ambulance should I ever need one which I did last April. (which by the way was $1700)

Years (many of them) ago, I kept a AAA membership for roadside assistance but let it lapse and now have coverage included in my auto insurance for a very small fee. It is also included in my MC insurance and as I ride a H-D, it is included in my Harley Owners Group (HOG) membership.

Another method the wife and I use to preclude roadside assistance, we maintain our vehicles well and have a great mechanic who services them well and keeps us informed of anything that is going or may go. A very honest, and reasonable man with great integrity.

The cheapest will also pay the tow truck the least. So the wait will become longer when you are last in line to be served.

Agreed. My dad had a saying “you get what you pay for. “

Here in the U.K. I use Britannia Rescue (previously C.S.M.A.) I used alternative to that earlier.
I had the misfortune to call upon them one time and an independent agent was there quick as a flash.

Noting on the side of his wagon stickers for many of the breakdown services I asked how come he got so fast (this would be around 1987/8) and he told me that C.S.M.A. pays him quicker, so if two jobs come in they always got preference.

Still with them today, used them a few times, not the cheapest but still there pretty smartish.

Maybe ask the agent who he prefers working for, probably worth a few $ hit.
