Does anyone use HD Radio?

Digital HD radio has been available in some areas for quite awhile now, but it doesn't seem to have become very popular. It operates much like digital TV and provides sub-channels to the normal radio broadcast stations. These sub-channels can simply be the digital version of the primary broadcast, entirely different program material, and/or data streams used to supply information about the music or programs being transmitted. This sounds like a great idea to me and I'm looking at buying an HD capable radio. However, I have also heard that many of the stations that originally adopted this format are beginning to discontinue the digital channels and it's not really required by the FCC. So what's the real deal from those of you out there that have and/or do use HD radio? I'd really appreciate your comments here!

I have it in both my cars and that's what I mostly listen to. I'd love to have a home unit but I don't know if they are available.

I have it and use it - it is quite nice. There are times when it falls out or looses sync (signal) and this can vary from a few seconds to minutes. I also have Sirius XM and think it is a little better but costs $$.

Every day. On my drive to work I listen to a HD station. I like the idea that I can see what's playing and the artist.

Obviously, there are some folks out there using HD radio, especially in their cars, etc. To those that do, how many stations in your area provide HD channels and how many sub-channels and what kind of alternate programming do they normally provide? Thanks for the feedback.

Digital HD radio has been available in some areas ... (show quote)

My wife's car has HD Radio. We listen to some public radio stations' sub channels (HD2, HD3) for their alternative content.

I use Safari on my Apple devices to listen to HD radio stations as well, direct from the stations' sites. They sound great. I also have the free 'myTuner Radio' app that plays thousands of Internet stations from all over the world. Only a few are available in HD, though.

I had Sirius for a while because it came with the car. It was not bad (but dropped out occasionally in wooded areas with heavy canopy) and I renewed it for a year but dropped it on the second renewal. I just wasn't that interested in listening to what it gave me. I generally listen to music and it just didn't fit my taste. I have 3 days worth of music on my iPhone so I just listen to that. I can easily add or subtract things I like.

As far as the sound is concerned, I used to have a great audio system (not portable, and barely portative [many dictionaries list portable and portative as synonyms but I take the definition of portative as "being able to be moved" and portable as "being able to be moved easily" ]). But as I age my hearing also ages and I can no longer appreciate the difference so standard audio is enough for me.

Hearing loss has both advantages and disadvantages when the wife is speaking.

I turned off the HD in the car. It drops back to regular signal too frequently which makes it distracting. I think the range needs improvement.

HD Radio --
I use it quite a lot --
One in the car but most appreciate HD broadcasts on my in-house system
Have an older model Marantz AV Pre Tuner (AV8801) that came with an HD-ready AM/FM Tuner --
All the later models have done away with AM/FM capabilities.
Stick with two listener-sponsored (no commercials) HD/FM stations --
One out of USC with Classical & the other out of Long Beach State with Jazz & Blues --
Also never took down the FM/TV Antenna so I enjoy a nice strong signal

I have it in the car, and the sound is great. Only problem is that it occasionally hits dead spots, which is very annoying.

There are at least a couple of dozen stations in the DFW metroplex. I listen to oldies most of the time 50's, 60's, and 70's. One station is broadcasting nothing but Christmas now but it's pop Christmas and none of the old Christmas hymns. Really quite a variety in the area.

I have a Sony XDR-F1HD sitting on a shelf about two feet from me. Haven't used in for years. With YouTube I listen to the music I like, when I like. Radio broadcasting hasn't discovered that concept yet.

Know the local University based NPR station is HD. Listen to it on SiriusXM in the car. There may be others, but not aware of who/what.
