I see that it was a year ago today that I joined UHH. While I have learned a lot, there is still much more to learn. The biggest change for me has been to go from full auto mode to manual mode. An that is a direct result of helpful photographers and their great postings. Thank you.

Just went to manual mode yesterday. I agree, reading the stuff here is priceless. And to think that each contributor did so for no other reason than to share their expertise. Would that the entire world worked this way.....

The best way to go to manual mode? Put the nifty fifty on your camera, and without taking a picture, play with the dof button and see how different apertures affect depth of field. When you understand the relationship of exposure, aperture, and depth of field, you will understand the value of going manual. It's also necessary to have a lens with a wide aperture to get good dof. A zoom that only has goes to f3.5 won't give you much dof. A 50mm with f1.8 will.

Whoa SteveR! Step on the brakes! A smaller aperture (larger number) f-8, f-11 gives greater DOF. A larger aperture (smaller number) f-1.8, f-3.5 gives less DOF.
Maybe the wife spiked your drink?

Happy 1st. year at UHH. Mine is due in Jan. Like you I have learned a lot here. I now shoot in manual and raw almost exclusively and see improvement in the results. I hope you won't mind if I add my "tip of the hat" to those here who have been so generous to us newcomers.
