I use Google to search for things every day, and I also Search on Amazon. "Search" is very handy, but it can also be deceptive.

Searches on Google, Bing, or any other search engine always list the "Ad" discoveries first, and they are usually worthless. Even when you get down to the legitimate discoveries, they are not always what I want. I usually have to click on several results to find what I was looking for.

Searching on Amazon is similar, and I almost ordered things I didn't want several times. If I do a search for metric tools, SAE tools will also pop up. That happens with virtually anything I look for on Amazon. There have been times when a search on showed me nothing that I was searching for - just alternatives. Amazon's goal is to sell products, not to give the customer exactly what he wants.

Yup, a lot of garbage comes up.

If the site's page keywords are set to "SAE, tools, metric, bubble gum, toast,...."

Guess when they'll show up?
Some sites use a CRAP LOAD of keywords, many irrelevant, but may include the most commonly searched words.
VERY ANNOYING as we get shown crap that is totally unrelated to what we're looking to find.

Yes, I've noticed that in product listings.

I try to use quotes to indicate "expressly this string", not any of these words.

Here's a follow-up. I watched a YouTube test of cordless impact wrenches last night, and the Ryobi did very well - for $159. Just out of curiosity, I checked the price on Amazon: $93. However, farther down the page of Ryobi tools was a Ryobi look-alike for $99 with battery, charger, sockets, and case for $99. On a page full of Ryobis, this one blends right in.

Try doing a search on a genealogy website. You get the same results only more or it.

Sometimes I enjoy the challenge of refining my criteria until I get what I’m looking for. And sometimes I fail. Life is like that.

I do that frequently, but it doesn't keep the irrelevant returns away.

DuckDuckGo, as I understand it, uses Google but blocks the tracking. It gives basically the same results.

Due diligence called for (as always). It’s not just the “sort of similar offerings” that creep in. Lately I’ve noticed items showing up (on Prime) that are not eligible for free shipping and that have high shipping costs. Latest example is a box of Spax stainless steel screws. $29 for the screws. $45 for shipping. A UK seller. Reminder to self: pay attention!

I was doing a search on Amazon and eBay for cordless stick vacuum cleaners. I was surprised how many with cords were displayed. Especially near the end of the listings.
