It was pretty easy, he just held the pose for me for what seemed like forever; even waited while I chose just the right spot to snap the photo. (He's a statue!! at the Pecos Bill memorial)

I'd have thought suggestions on composition would be a bit superfluous. How about starting by moving round until you don't have branches in the way everywhere? That's composing a shot so that you can see if the composition satisfies yourself. Then you're on the way. Mike.
