I would rate these Good and Very Good. The good one is The Last Days on Mars. The very good one is Prometheus, a Ridley Scott film, so you know it will be good.

Something that bothered me in both films was the actions of the characters. These people are selected and trained for space travel, yet they fall apart emotionally, and they make really stupid decisions.

If you watch Prometheus, be sure to watch right to the end. Also, early in the credits, notice who did the designing.

Both on Amazon Prime.

Without "falling apart emotionally and making stupid decisions", the movie industry would fall apart.

Yes, I realize that. Still, they could have come up with a better plot line.

Yeah, "last Days On Mars" was a decent, not great film. Watchable. Prometheus on the other hand, I thought was terrible. As a stand alone movie, apart from the alien franchise, it would have been good. But to me, it totally ruined the alien creature mythos. An engineered bioweapon? I can't believe it and the original Alten came from the same mind. Just my 2 cents.

And that's why not everyone drives the same color car.

"Prometheus" was a great five minute Icelandic travelogue, followed by two hours of unbelievable storytelling.

For folks who are "trained" scientists, astronauts, and engineers, their lack of scientific knowledge is staggering. First, there's a doctor on board who doesn't know the upper limits of CO2 breath-ability? She and Dr. Shaw perform some half-assed cranial autopsy without strict contamination protocols.

How about a biologist that wants to "play" nice with an unknown life form?

Dr. Shaw dictates the security of the mission? I thought Meredith Vickers ran the show, and Shaw, et al., were employees.

Shaw's science mantra is "what I choose to believe""

3% CO2 saturation is not lethal.

Innumerable laws of physics are ignored.

Other than that... "How was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?"

It is sometimes hard to have specific knowledge while you are watching TV or a movie. My wife got mad at me one time when I expressed scorn over an episode of ER (It's just a TV show!): the resident physician was attacked by a patient and had to have his scalp sutured. George Clooney or whoever was sewing him up called for Ethilon suture. The resident was black. I just laughed and laughed - everyone who has worked in an ER knows that if you use Ethilon - a black woven nylon - in the scalp of a black person you are not going to be able to find it when you need to take it out a week later. You really want to use Prolene, a bright blue monofilament nylon (like fishing line), which you will be able to find later... (I always tried to repair scalp wounds without shaving hair - most patients preferred that) My biggest complaint about medical shows is that they could at least have the actors take a 3-hour CPR class so that they know how to do CPR. Only about 1/4 of the time is TV CPR realistic....

Just roll with it. The "Fi" part of "Sci-Fi" means it is a fictional story, which means it is NOT entirely true or correct. Got it. JEEZ!!

Being fairly science oriented and a long time follower of aviation and space technology I always see the flaws in science fiction movies...and there's plenty to see. I think the movie offering the most accurate science is "The Martian." One of the worst, that pretended to look accurate, is the movie with George Clooney and Sandra Bullock where she goes flitting from a demolished ISS, to a Russian space station to a Chinese space station all of which were in different orbits and thousands of miles apart but she does it as easily as someone back stroking down a swimming pool.

"Gravity"... I liked that one a lot. I thought Sandra Bullock was outstanding.

Another unexplainable TV dumb move is on virtually every cop show. The cops, FBI, NCIS, etc. are a block away from the suspect and they announce themselves with something like “Average Miscreant, FBI! We want to talk to you.” The supposed bad guy looks at them, dumbfounded for a second or two, and then the chase is on. Why don’t they walk up to, or bring enough bodies to surround the bad guy, and then announce? No chases, no avoiding arrest, no gunfights, no clotheslining, just boring television.

Good morning Jerry,

I feel the same and have seen this in so many films of this genre. These individuals were evidently flight qualified relative to the absolutely significant stress likely to be encountered while on any given mission. Yet they prove to be completely inadequate WSHT (when the shit hits the fan). Whatever sells at the box office seems to be accepted regardless of accuracy. Good observation Jer. Keep 'em coming.

All the best to you and yours,

Terry

My wife and I joke about this all the time. From across the street..."drop your gun FBI" and the chase begins. Do you think they're that stupid in real life? LOL

Thanks. I'll look for that.

EDIT: I'd have to rent it, so I'll wait till it's "free" on my $17 Netflix or $128 Amazon Prime.
