Hi Just looking for some advise. I have just bought a Tamron 100-400mm Lens which weighs 39.9 oz or 1.132g will I need a Tripod collar mount ring? My Camera is a D3300.
I don't think it's absolutely needed as the lens isn't very long. Longer lens would have more leverage against the lens mount. If you use it on tripod often I would get the tripod mount option.

The beauty of a tripod ring is that it allows you to switch to a vertical position without awkwardly hanging the lens off to the side. It is far faster to use and keeps the lens balenced over the center of the tripod.

You will enjoy the better balance from a collar, but the really great reward is the on-axis rotation.
Acoarst if you’re a verrrry well practiced handheld sharpshooter then you’d have no need of a collar ... but neither would you ask such a question.

go to your search engine - ie Google etc and search for "tamron 100-400 tripod collar" you will find the Tamron collar at $129 and numerous third party ones at lower prices - do NOT get the cheap plastic ones - get metal, most are aluminum. If you order it from a major store like B&H, Adorama etc. you can contact their sales people and make sure you get one for the Tamron lens.
I use a tripod collar on my Canon 100-400L mk2 and my Canon 70-300L but most of the time I have a screw on pistol grip mounted to the collar - it makes handholding much better in my opinion. My Tamron 150-600 G2 of course is actually mounted on a tripod - I tried the pistol grip but decided that 20 years ago it would have been OK, but now I don't have the hand strength/endurance to handhold that big a lens for a day of shooting=tripod or monopod time.

I own that lens, and I did get the collar. However, the lens is so light that I don’t recall ever using it on a tripod or monopod as I go birding. But, if you need a steady platform, why not get the collar?

Do you really need to mount this lens on a tripod?
You may find that hand-holding will give you far more useable shots once you get comfortable with the technique. I use a D810 and a Sigma Sport 150-600 - total weight of 3.84kg, or 8.47 lbs - and I use it 99% of the time hand held.

Most healthy "normal" people will be able to hand hold this lens with good success. - but, there may be times mounting to a tripod/monopod is desired. I would get a third party collar vs the relatively expensive OEM tamron. .

Hi Gene unfortunately my arthritis is progressing rapidly 6 months ago I would not have considered one but recent outings have convinced me that I should maybe get one - my wrists hurt like hell. I have probably used a tripod twice but anyway One is on its way and I managed to get it at a very reasonable price.
