Anyone using something other than the terrible hood that comes with the lens?

Thanks for asking! Don't care for mine either - looked and found this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljyyhR0SBfw

Might give it a try!

Look at Lens Coat collapsible hood for 200-500mm. Packs flat and protects gear in your camera bag.

A few years ago I also went to a light metal screw in hood about five inches long. There are a few different lengths available. In and out of the car hundreds of times and miles of hiking with no mishaps.

Nikon can make a nice lens, but they're not up to the challenge of making a hood?

The one on my Tamron G2 is even worse!

Mine even cracked, but is still hanging on
They should recall it.

I am sure they were struggling to hit a "popular" price point with the lens, in that they succeeded, and the lens itself is very good. As it seems to go with many things these days, the hood a small design flaw that is aggravating. Probably just not adequately executed, and I doubt it saved much. I could go down a list of devices I own outside of photography with similar deficient details.

The lens hood on the Nikon 200-500 is a wonderful piece of equipment. It is not terrible, my old lens used that hood for three hard years almost every day, several hours a day, in Florida wetlands. Never came loose, always stayed in place, was very durable, locked on in one easy motion, and never gave me a bid of trouble and never let in stay light, (of course I knew how to use it) Do you?

It is by far the worst of any of the many (I don't know how many) Nikon lens hoods I own, even compared to the other plastic ones. I have used it for several years and find it hard to mount when in a hurry, inconvenient to reverse mount, and palpably fragile. It has held together so far, and performs as it is supposed to. I will run with it till it breaks or terminally irritates me at which point I will find and buy a better one.

I have found mine anything but fragile (basically because I know how to use it) I have never reversed my lens hood (why on earth would anyone do that, my lens is always ready to use with the hood extended, as stated in the instruction manual for it).
Why would you have to put it on in a hurry? If your a prepared photographer, you place the hood correctly before taking out of the house, or when you take it out of the car to begin shooting. You mean your lens is reversed, then you see something you want to take an image of, so in a hurry you try to put the lens hood on in a hurry? Failing to plan is planning to fail (an old boy scout saying).
I am glad to read that for you, it has held together so far, and performs as it is supposed to. Good for you.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

We each have our operating methods. Your repeated suggestions that people do not know how to use their equipment are rude and deliberately offensive, particularly in regard to something as simple as a lens hood. I store and transport my 200-500 in a fitted Tundra case case mounted on a camera with the hood reversed and lens cap on. When I am en route to a particular site, I will usually have the camera out and ready to go. On occasion either when the camera is stored at home, or prior to deploying it, an unexpected photo opportunity will present itself, say a new bird outside the window, or unusual wildlife before I have even reached the road. In those cases speed is important. Since you are so fond of that lens hood, please enjoy - my feeling is your ability to judge the quality equipment is questionable at best.

If you are saying that I am questionable in judging the quality of photography, when why did you buy the 200-500, like I did.

YOU, though apparently center of your own Universe, had no influence on my purchase decision, nor is there anything wrong with the lens for its price range. The hood is a POS.
