IMHO, there isn't a Tamron lens made as good as an equivalent Nikon. There are differences in price and weight for good reasons. I do own, and like very much, several Sigma ART lenses, but have long sold any Tamron I have ever owned. Best of luck.

It seems that Nikon glass quality, coating (or processing) is better - better contrast and color rendition IMO, all else being equal. Sure Nikon does make a few crappy lenses but for the most part are better than 3rd party equivalents. I do like the 90mm macro a lot, and the 100-400 seems to be better than average Tamron quality (don't have that one), but otherwise Nikon is the way to go on a Nikon body.

I think I have decided to back off and wait to see what Nikon comes out with for the Z series. I do appreciate all the replies and info everyone has provided. Thanks, Grandpaw

I have experienced the alternatives Twice! And the experiences told me the Nikon beats the pants off the Tamron all week long! And wait for it...thrice on Sunday.

I wish now that all these comments were available before I bought the Tamron 150-600 G2 two years ago. I probably would have opted for the Nikon 200-500. But as I mentioned earlier, it would have been sitting idle for most of the time as I am in poor health.

Any Z lens Nikon comes out with will beat the competition optically - but so will the price
.

Fiddlemaker, don’t go with what you read here most of the time. A lot of folks here and other places ( far be it that I think I’m an authority on this subject or any other subject, for I’m not) but knowing what I have learned through my short 87 years of observing people and there likes and dislikes, people choose what ever they buy based on the name. To choose a basically unknown name like Tamron over a known name product would never happen.
I’m a little different. If I get interested in a certain product, I read all I can about it and if it meets my needs and capabilities I buy it. If it doesn’t work out, I’ve learned a lot and drive on, but never trash it.
But that’s just me.
Cheers.

It's good to know that you read all you can about a product before you buy it. In that case, you would never buy a Tamron lens.

To be honest, I am very happy with the results that I have obtained with this particular copy of the Tamron 150-600 G2 given that I have used it only 3 or 4 times and so I should not complain. When they roll me into the cremation furnace, someone will inherit a good lens that is in mint condition. Along with the Tap-in console.

Making blanket quality statements is counterproductive. You have to look at 3rd party glass on an individual basis including the body it will be used with. Some 3rd party glass is rated higher than Nikon glass like the Tamron 85mm f/1.8, the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 and Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 compared to the Nikon equivalents on a D850 dslr. Just be prepared for tuning to get the most out of 3rd party glass. Tamron sells the tap-in for a reason. I use Dxomark.com as my starting point for research. Z glass is a whole different situation in that there isn’t a lot of 3rd party stuff out there.

Good points I agree it's not a "bad" lens just some nitpicking as compared to the Nikon. It's actually very good - but also other considerations. Most zooms perform the worst at the long end, especially tele zooms. So if you shoot at 500mm (the same limit as the Nikon) you should get excellent results. I've shot at 400-500mm with great results. When comparing lenses there are usually tradeoffs, some give and take. If the Nikon had the same features as the Tamron (fluorine coating for example, weather sealing, etc.) it would be a "gold rim" lens and cost over $2k.

Yes, you are correct that someone will inherit a lens in mint condition. But your incorrect about the good part.
