All of us with dog friends are! Except, within reason, more dogs!

You got that right. HOWEVER, he lady who was my helper for 30 years when I was painting wall murals, has 12 dogs and 30 cats. They all live inside!!! And that's all I'll say about that.

we are very much missing our lad, Skip.

Losing one hurts our hearts BADLY. Maybe you could adopt an older dog that would otherwise be put to sleep and give it a little more time?

Well, I am 84 and I said if anything happened to these before I go, that would be the end. My big girl is 10 and my little guy is 15. I dread the day, but after thinking about it, if I could keep an OLD, small, female dog from being put to sleep as long as possible, I would do that. I'd be doing it for her, not for me.

then you die and the dog will what????be "put to sleep" passed on to a relative.?? Not for us..and it is costly to keep a pet and pay Vets fees from the pension.

I totally understand. I just feel like some of these little dogs, if given a choice, would rather be put to sleep next month or next year than right now. Just the way I think. And yes Vet bills are outrageous. If it got sick I would not let it linger to suffer. I am very fortunate to have a son and DIL who will take mine if anything happens to me. They too, would never let them suffer.

our beautiful 12 year old German Shepherd, one evening refused his food...he had been his usual bright smiling self all day. About 15 minutes later I said to my husband that dog's breathing had changed and that I thought he was in pain. Immediately took him to the 24/7 Vet. 5 minutes from home........they did a blood test and a scan which showed his spleen was one huge cancer and that 50% of his stomach was so infected. we had no option but to have him put down. That was February and we are still missing him very much. First time on over 65 years of marriage we are without a dog. He had shown NO signs of illness or discomfort.

Oh, that is so sad. Dogs seem to be able to hide illness for quite a while and then the worst can happen so suddenly. You did the right thing, even though it hurt you so badly. You kept him from long time suffering. Grief for a pet can last a long time. We had to put our beloved Corgi down 4 years ago, She too had cancer. I still miss her so badly. I have to remind myself of the good times and how funny she was and sometimes that doesn't even help. I still haven't gotten over my tiny tea-cup poodle that we lost 14-15 years ago. Lost a wonderful German Shepherd about 25 years ago, a Collie a few years before that. Like you, I have never been without a dog. My first dog was born the day before I was. My grandfather had the mother dog and declared one of the puppies mine as soon as I was born. I've had birds and dogs all my life. My parrot still calls my husband who passed away 2 1/2 years ago and cries like a newborn when he doesn't answer her. We who love our pets just can't help it and I don't understand anyone who doesn't love them. My dad always said that a person who doesn't love animals, doesn't love other people either. I believe that. God bless you both. I wish you peace and comfort when you think of your boy.

Ye Carol. My big dog is a sweetheart and she loves him. He was loved his first 2 years, then abused for 6 years. It's as if she knows. He was 8 when I got him. I'm very thankful that he has learned to live a life with no fear for almost 7 years now.

Sweet memories of the ones who are most loyal and love us unconditionally.
