I was waiting for turkeys to go on sale, and yesterday was the day. I bought two for $0.47/lb. I'm all set for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Unfortunately, I had to take the Stauffer's lasagna and mac and cheese out of the freezer. I'll cook both of them today and eat them over the next week. The ice cream I bought wouldn't fit into the freezer, so I was forced to eat the whole thing while watching TV. Yummy! I also found some frozen chicken from January.
If you don't make cranberry sauce from the berries, you should try it. One quart of water, one cup of sugar, one bag of cranberries - boil it. Simple and delicious. Now that my son has nut allergies, we won't be having Stovetop stuffing or the sweet potato casserole we always look forward to.
Think I'll try the cranberry sauce recipe!

It's on the bag of cranberries, too.
My wife makes a somewhat similar Thanksgiving relish. Instead of boiling, she runs a bag of fresh cranberries through a meat grinder along with an orange, peel and all. Lots of sugar, needless to day.
I often hike past cranberry bogs out on Cape Cod when I'm visiting my friend. Cranberries missed from harvesting still float untouched in the bogs. My friend explained that Cranberries have absolutely no nutritive value whatsoever and all animals (except one) are smart enough to avoid them. Tastes great with turkey, though.

Use orange juice instead of water. Very tasty this way.
Thanks for the suggestions.
I add some hot chiles to the cranberries - cranberry salsa.

I used to make a loaf of bread for thanksgiving. When mixing the dough I would put all the spices that we usually used in turkey stuffing into it. After the turkey dinner we used the bread for sandwiches.
If you try this, note that it takes a lot of spices. Like 1-2 tablespoons of thyme and similar things (whatever you use). Putting sausage in the bread might work (haven't tried it) but I would think it would shorten the shelf life since you wouldn't want to leave it out as long as you might usually leave bread.

My mother always made cornbread dressing out of homemade cornbread. She made one normal batch, and another with oysters, which not all of us liked.
I spent most of my adult Thanksgiving in the Caribbean at my wife's parents/relatives.
Vegetables...I'd never seen before...it was hit and small misses.
Homemade moonshine...which was a fruity brandy ...awesome.
Turkey? You bet...but stuffed with shrimp, crab, lobster, stuffing, spices...first one blew my mind.
And sorry Jerry...no cranberries.

For the cranberry sauce, I use orange juice instead of water - it adds a nice flavor.
Jerry, your approach and mine to freezer space management are quite similar.

Fortunately, Stewart's doesn't have any tempting flavors of ice cream on sale this week. Next week could be a problem if they have something I like.
