Agree jk48, to me they were the best designed fighter, although the P-38 was a close second...

I'd put the P-38 ahead of the spitfire.
I love the last image of the arrows.

I put the P51 Mustang above them both. Used beyond WWII and still seen at airshows and used competitively in racing, I believe.

Then, there is also the F4 U Corsair with its gull shaped folding wings. A whole TV series was based on it and a famous squadron that flew them - "BaBa Black Sheep" about Pappy Boyington and the Black Sheep Squadron in the Pacific theatre of WWII. Accelerated U.S. air superiority with it mastery of the Japanese Zero aircraft.

The aircraft served in combat roles way beyond WWII.

Extensive information on both the P-51 and the Corsair in Wikipedia.

In fact,Hurricanes shot down more enemy than Spitfires but there were more built. The Hurricane could outturn the Spitfire and all German aircraft but the Spitfire was beloved by pilots.
The Mustang was a marvelous aircrfat but only when fitted with a Rolls Royce Merlin engine.

Sally B? I see someone knows their B17's. Lucky you, I have only been to Duxford once, but it was an awesome experience. I have to admit, I mainly went to see the 'Spits'. There was a squadron of them airborne.
