This will teach me when I go outside in the AM to bring my camera. Man, I was lucky!! Went out to get the paper, it was early and very cloudy. As I walked by this dead damp stump I heard muffled banging and there, practically beside me, was this male Pileated Woodpecker. I got the paper hurried into the house, got my camera and my 70-300. He had left that stump and instead had gone to another. Thought I had lost him till he showed himself banging on another stump.
These chances don't come everyday around here.
Enjoy!

Both photos excellent except on blow up shows some noise in backgrounds.

Thanks Sarge. Yes I know, It was very cloudy, threatened rain and I was afraid to use a flash that I would spook the bird, so I raised the ISO to 2000. Again it is a 70-300 so with the high ISO and zoom I am sure that is the reason for the noise. Even with the noise I will print it, it is one of the better ones that I have shot. Thanks for your comment and looking, much appreciated.

Still excellent, I rarely get chances to shoot birds in the wild because of time constraints, it takes patience, stamina and a lot of luck sometimes.

Sarge-- The noise you hear is the pecker pecking on the tree. Right! Hehe

Very nice, great detail. Every year in the spring a pileated wakes us pecking on a metal vent pipe on the house next door, loud like two pot lids banging. Wonder if he would be sharpening his bill??? Nothing for him to eat on the metal pipe.

Thanks WVHillbilly, interesting thought. We do know that drumming by Woodpeckers in general is territorial, and I would suppose if in that drumming the noise is louder than usual the bird might by like a little kid, bang all the louder, either to establish his dominance of for attention.
Thanks for looking, much appreciated.
